The Headlines Cried Out, “Michelle Obama Slams Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In Theory!” “Michelle Obama Thinks Lean In Is Ineffective!” It Was As If The Media, Which Is Mostly Controlled By Males, Had United To Take Any Discussion About Women In The Workforce And Declare, “I Told You So! Even Michelle Obama Believes That You Truly Can’t Have It All. And Given That 86% Of Women Become Moms, As The New York Times Observed In 2018, It Was No Surprise That The Subject Swiftly Entered The Public Conversation. I Had A Different Idea, However, When I Read The Tales And Listened To The Accompanying Spirited Debates Over Whether Women Could Really Have It All. Yes, You May, I Reasoned, “But Not Like This.”
I Read Sheryl Sandberg’s 2013 Book Lean In Along With Millions Of Other People, And It Inspired Me To Reconsider Numerous Societal Conventions That I Had Long Since Blindly Accepted. I Was Motivated By Her Book, Which Exhorts Women To Pursue Their Jobs Head-on And Establish Their Leadership Abilities, To Go On Growing My Firm, Which I Had Begun After Taking A Few Years Off From The Typical Corporate Sector To Be With My Small Children. But I Can Also See Why Many Individuals Claim That Leaning In Is Ineffective. There Are Several Reasons Why One May Argue That Leaning In, Taken In Its Most Basic Meaning, Is Impractical, Yet The Book Has Succeeded In Becoming A Part Of A National Discourse For More Than Six Years. However, I Do Not Believe That Leaning In Itself Is The Problem. What Doesn’t Work Isn’t The Desire To Lead And Earn A Decent Income Or The Pursuit Of Meaningful Employment. Even While We Want To Alter Things, The Structures We’re Clinging To Are What Provide The Impression That It Will Be Tough.
Many Corporate Forms, Such As The Single-earner, Male, And Racially Homogenous Ones, Have Their Roots In A Bygone Era. In Her 2019 Book Lean Out, Marissa Orr Writes That “Our Systems Must Evolve, And Until They Do They’re Leaving A Treasure Of Diverse Talent On The Table.” “Recognise The Limitations Of The System In Which We Work And Understand That It Cannot Always Fulfil Our Deepest Human Needs,” Suggests Orr As One Approach. The Misery Of Our Occupations Starts To Loosen Its Hold When We See That We Are Searching For Fulfilment In All The Wrong Places, And We May Then Discover Alternate Means Of Satisfying Our Needs. Orr Writes Openly About Her Experience Leaving Facebook In Lean Out. She Delves Into The Question Of Whether Women Really Desire The Leadership Positions That Sandberg Encourages Them To Pursue In Her Book, And She Provides Data Demonstrating That, In Reality, Very Few People—men Or Women—aspire To Be Ceos Or High-level Managers. Instead Of Focusing On Bringing More Women Into Top Roles Within Today’s Business Structures, She Advises For Allocating Funding Towards Assisting Women In Lower Positions. I Can Appreciate Her Argument And The Media Flurry That Followed Michelle Obama’s Remark. This, In My Opinion, Is A False Dichotomy.
Why Not Provide An Alternative, One That Allows Both Men And Women To Rebuild The Same Systems That Are Broken And To Immediately Create The Lifestyles They Desire, Rather Than Debating Whether Women Should Lean In Or Lean Out?
