In This Thrilling And Romantic Book By Prize-winning Authors Amal El-mohtar And Max Gladstone, Two Time-traveling Agents From Warring Futures Who Are Working Their Way Through The Past Begin To Exchange Letters—and Fall In Love.
Red Discovers A Burn Before Reading Letter In The Ashes Of A Dying World. Signature: Blue.
So Starts An Improbable Correspondence Between Two Antagonistic Agents In A Conflict That Spans The Vast Reaches Of Time And Space.
A Post-singularity Utopia Called Red Belongs To The Agency. Garden, A Single, Vast Consciousness Imbedded In All Organic Matter, Is The Owner Of The Colour Blue. Their Futures Are Incompatible Because Of Their Bloody Pasts. Except For The Fact That They Are The Best And The Only One, They Have Nothing In Common.
What Was Once A Battlefield Brag Has Evolved Into A Risky Game That Both Red And Blue Want To Win. Because In War, Winning Is What You Do. Is It Not?
A Brilliant Collaboration Between Two Formidable Writers That Traverses All Of Time And Space.
This Is How You Lose The Time War, Ye Mighty, And Despair! Look At My Works!
A Little Joke. Please Have Faith That I Have Considered All Ironic Factors. Although I Suppose The Joke’s On Me If You Aren’t Acquainted With Overanthologized Works From The Early Strand 6 Nineteenth Century.
You Coming Was Hoped For.
You’re Curious In What This Is, But Not, In My Opinion, About Who This Is. You Are Aware That We Still Have Unfinished Business, Just As I Have Been When Our Eyes First Met During That Messy Incident On Abrogast-882.
I’ll Admit To You Right Now That I’ve Been Becoming Complacent. Even The War Bores Me; I Watch Your Agency’s Upthread And Downthread Flash And Dash, While A Garden Patiently Plants And Prunes Strands, Burrowing Into Time’s Braid. Less A Game Of Go Than A Game Of Tic-tac-toe, Outcomes Are Predetermined From The First Move And Iterated Endlessly Until The Split When We Fork Off Into Unstable, Chaotic Possibility—the Future We Want To Secure At The Expense Of One Another.
But You Later Showed Up.
My Margins Went Away. I Had To Really Commit To Every Action I’d Previously Made Out Of Habit. You Gave Your Side’s Speed And Tenacity Some Depth, And I Was Able To Resume Working At Full Capacity. You Reenergized The War Effort Of Your Shift, Which Also Reenergized Me.
Please Accept My Gratitude Wherever.
I Have To Admit That It Makes Me Very Happy To See You Reading These Words As Your Eyes Are Licked And Swirled With Flame, Unable To Keep The Letters On The Page But Forced To Absorb And Admit Them Into Memory. You Must Look For My Presence In Your Thoughts, Tangled Among Them Like Sunlight In Water, To Recall Them. You Must Admit You Have Been Infiltrated, Another Victim Of This Most Unlucky Day, In Order To Report My Words To Your Superiors.
This Is How We Will Triumph.
It’s Not Only My Intention To Brag. Please Know That I Respected Your Strategy. Your Work’s Elegance Makes This War Seem Less Like A Waste. Speaking Of Which, Your Spherical Flanking Gambit’s Hydraulics Were Truly Amazing. I Hope You’ll Find Comfort In The Knowledge That Our Mulchers Will Thoroughly Digest Them So That A Little Portion Of You Will Be Present In Our Next Victory Against Your Side.
Next Time, Have Better Luck.
Fondly,
Rival Operatives On Opposing Sides Of The Time War Are Red And Blue. In Order To Assist Their Side In Securing The Future They Want, Players Must Navigate Through The Braids Of Time And Weave And Unweave History.
Red’s Side, The Agency, Is A Highly Advanced Civilization Where Basic Human Needs Like Hunger And Sleep Have Been Manufactured Away. They See An Advanced Technological Future. A Civilization Centred On Nature Called Garden, On Blue’s Side, Views Abstractions Like Words As Hazardous. The Hive Of Their People Is Served By The Future Garden. In Order To Promote The Broader Sense Of Collective Identity, Both Sides Have Abandoned The Idea Of The Individual.
Red And Blue First Blindly Defend Their Respective Positions While Secretly Teasing And Probing One Other In Letters, But As They Attempt To Unravel The Webs Of Time That The Other Has Created For Them, They Finally Unravel Each Other And Fall In Love. They Declare Their Love In Their More Frequent And Impassioned Letters. Their Relationship Is Set Against The Background Of The Conflict; It Is Not Where They First Met Or Why They Are Here.
Red Starts To Believe The Agency Is Following Her Since She Always Senses A Shadow. When Commandant Meets Red About Blue In Russia And Requests That Red Set Blue Up For Poisoning Because The Agency Believes Blue May Be Attempting To Convert Red, Red’s Worries Are Realised.
Blue Claims She Will Heed Red’s Advice To Not Read Her Next Letter, But She Doesn’t. Blue Consumes The Poison Designed Just For Her Because Of Worry That Red’s Treason Will Be Discovered If Blue Doesn’t Accept The Bait. As Blue Reads Red’s Letter, She Dies A Painful Death.
Red Gives Her All To The Tasks At Hand. Although She Is Seen As A Hero, Red Really Travels Across Time Gathering All The Fragments That Blue Left Behind. Red Creates A Second Skin From Of Blue’s Dna That Will Make Her Seem To Be Blue. Red Sneaks Inside Garden While Protected By This Second Skin And Administers Antivenom To Blue As A Kid To Protect Her From The Poison.
She Is Held Captive By The Agency, Tormented, And Left To Perish—until She Discovers A Message From Blue In Her Cell. Her Strategy Worked. Blue Has Life. The Shadow That Made Her Feel Uneasy Was Not The Agency, But Rather A Future Version Of Herself Searching For Parts Of Blue To Rescue Her.
Red And Blue Create A Wonderful Life Together While Being Forever Concealed From Both Sides.
I Only Read It On Read-along Calls With Other Club Members Every Weekend Since It Was A Group Read. I Probably Would Have Read It In One Sitting Rather Than Over The Course Of Three Saturdays If I Had Done It Alone.
You Waste Time Like This. Without Any Introduction Or Foreshadowing, War Plunges Us Right Into The Narrative And Keeps Going. To Fully Understand What Is Happening, The Reader Must Read Many Chapters, And Even Then, They Can Still Be Perplexed.
Only About Halfway Through The Book Did I Feel Like I Really Understood It. I Started Out With Almost No Comprehension Of The Story Since I Hadn’t Read The Actual Synopsis. In Comparison To The Story’s Pacing, My Comprehension Grew Rather Slowly. But As Things Began To Make Sense In My Head, I Became Engrossed In The Book.
The Narrative Moves Quickly Right Away. The Book Doesn’t Wait For Us To Catch On Before Picking Up The Pace After Dropping Us In. While We Are Confused About What Is Going On, It Makes For Some Interesting Chapters (Or The Entire Book).
Because I Dislike Slow-moving Stories, This Was Just Up My Alley. I Couldn’t Read It Quickly Enough Towards The End And Didn’t Pause. What Will Happen Next, Next, And Next? Was What I Wanted To Know.
The Time Travel Element Satisfied. Because Of The Butterfly Effect, The Two Main Characters Go Upthread (Backward In Time) And Downthread (Forward In Time) To Make Little Changes That Have Big Effects. Watching Them Jump “Strands,” Compare The Many Time Strands, And Create Waves Was Quite Fascinating.
I Want One Major Twist Or Revelation In Every Time Travel Story. The Possibilities Of Time Travel Are Endless. This Book Capitalised On The Chance And Had A Terrific Final Twist. A Fact That Was Subtly Intriguing Throughout The Story Was Transformed Into A Significant Event. The Hints Are All Well Integrated. I Exhaled.
The Growth Of Red And Blue’s Relationship Was Gradual, Entertaining, And Yearning-filled. This Book Was A Fantastic Rivals To Lovers Sapphic Romance. It Was Amazing To See Them Play The Part Of Enemies While Being Really Skilled At Their Jobs And Penning Resentful Letters. Towards The End, I Was Heavily Annotating.
The Interesting Thing About The Characters And The Romance Is That Neither Are Really Female, Hence The Only Reason It Qualifies As “Sapphic” Is Because They Use The Pronouns She And She. Heteronormative Roles Are Definitely Not Played In Red And Blue’s Relationship. They Are Butch And Femme In Certain Aspects Of Their Personalities, But They Exist In A Separate Dimension.
Additionally, They Undermine The Often Used Heteronormative Time Travel Romance Trope. Red And Blue Sabotage One Another While Coming Up With Some Really Creative Letter-sending And Letter-reading Techniques. I Eagerly Anticipated Seeing What They Accomplished In Each Chapter. After The Twist, Everything Picks Up Speed And We Are Able To Fully Appreciate The Potential Of Time Travel. It Was Fantastic.
Is This Is How You Lose The Time War Unique Because Of Its Writers, The Lgbtq And Feminine Themes, The Dearth Of Male Sci-fi Protagonists, Or The Enjoyable Reimagining Of The Time Travel Subgenre?
Yes.
This Is How You Lose The Time War Is Just 208 Pages, So Thanks To My Good Fortune, I Was Able To Complete It On The Train Back To Toronto. I Discovered It At Novel Idea, One Of Canada’s Greatest And Most Beloved Book Shops. Even If The Book Had Been 1,000 Pages Long, I Could Have Read It All In One Sitting. It Was Unlike Anything I’ve Ever Read, And I Doubt I Will Be Again.
The Fact That Such A Short Novella Had Two Writers Caught Me Off Guard When I Started Reading This Is How You Lose The Time War. The Idea That It Would Be Lengthier If Two People Wrote It May Be Absurd, But It Was Nonetheless An Odd One. Even Stranger Is The Fact That Max Gladstone, A Guy, Is One Of The Authors Of This Story Focused On Women. In The Photo For His Author Bio, A Guy Is Carrying A Sword. He Immediately Had My Endorsement Due To The Image And The Obvious Feminism.
The Other Co-author Is Amal El-mohtar, Who Google Has Now Linked To The Query “How Was The Time War Lost?” She Is A Woman To Be Envied With A Career That Encompasses Poetry Writing, Winning Accolades Like The Hugo And The Nebula, And Editing A Publication Called Goblin Fruit. It Is Obvious How She Was Able To Achieve Such Accolades, Particularly For Time War, Since Her Lyrical Narrator Effortlessly Blends Charm And Grief Without Wasting A Single Word.
The Main Plot Of Time War Is The Romance Between Two Badass, Gender-fluid Robo-ladies That Travel Across Time. There Aren’t Any Men To Be Found, But There Aren’t Many Traditional Gender Roles Either. I Wish I Could Argue That This Is More Than Simply A Major Deal—it Ought To Be The Right Decision. Why Shouldn’t We Be Able To Read Futuristic Tales As Sci-fi Is Often About The Future? I Have To Admit, As Someone Who Was Thrilled To See An Asian Cylon In The Original Battlestar Galactica Series From 1978, I’m More Than Content To Watch Two Femme-androgynous Robots Fall In Love. Of All, There Can Only Truly Be Lgbtq Romance Without Males. As Entertaining As It Is To See Individuals Come To Terms With Their Sexuality In Spite Of Their Upbringing Or Society, Normalising Something Progressive Like A Gay Robot Love Story Is One Of The Nicest Things You Can Do. No Men? Heterosexuality Absent? No Issue.
In Addition, The Writers Still Suggested That We Make It Feminine While We’re At It. This Narrative Has A Number Of Uniquely Feminine Elements. The Braid, A Meandering And Confusing “Road” That The Characters Use To Get From One Location And Time Period To Another, Is One Of The Coolest And Most Important Parts Of The Story.
The Time Travel Subgenre Is Nothing New. As Time Is Not Linear, You May Go Back In Time To 1952 To Read Bradbury’s A Sound Of Thunder, When He First Described The Butterfly Effect, Or To 1969 To Read About Billy Pilgrim’s Escape From Time Travel. A Thousand Distinct Time Travel Laws Exist In A Hundred Different Variations. This Is How You Lose The Time War Works So Effectively Because There’s No Need To Invent The Wheel With Fresh Ideas. The Writers Presume You Already Know How Things Operate And Instead Concentrate On An Intriguing New Manner Of Displaying It Since There Isn’t Much Room To Explain The Rules In Such A Short Amount Of Pages.
Time Travel May Be Perplexing, Which Can Result In Absurd Explanations, Gaps In The Narrative, And Meandering Storylines, Which Is Another Advantage Of Time War. Short Stories Like Story Of Your Life And Slaughterhouse-five Are Among The Most Memorable Time Travel Tales, And They Succeed Because There Is No Margin For Mistake. Time War Is A Narrative About Time Travel, But It’s Also A Beautiful, Feminist Love Story With Wonderful Writing; No Crazy Restrictions.
This Is How You Lose The Time War Won’t Let You Down Whether You Read It Out Of Bragging Rights, Because It’s An Epic Work Of Literature, Or Just Because It’s A Delightful Addition To The Time Travel Genre.
