Think Like A Monkthink Like A Monk: Train Your Mind For Peace And Purpose Every Day Book By Jay Shetty PDF Free Download, Online, Book, Wikipedia, Summary Pdf, Lessons From Think Like A Monk, Slideshare, Chapters, Exercises.
When I Was Eighteen Years Old, One Of My Friends Asked Me To Accompany Him To See A Monk Give A Talk During My First Year Of College At Cass Business School In London. I Objected. Why Would I Want To Go Hear A Monk? I Often Attended Lectures On Campus Given By Ceos, Famous People, And Other Successful People, But I Had No Interest In Becoming A Monk. I Liked Listening To Speakers Who Had Had Real Life Accomplishments.
I Finally Said, “As Long As We Go To A Bar Afterwards, I’m In,” After My Friend Persisted. The Phrase “Falling In Love” Is Almost Often Used To Describe Romantic Relationships. Nevertheless, That Evening As I Listened To The Monk Discuss His Experience, I Fell In Love. A Thirty-something Indian Man Served As The Guide On Stage. He Had A Shaved Head And Was Dressed In A Saron Robe. He Was Charismatic, Intelligent, And Eloquent. He Discussed The Idea Of “Seless Sacrifice.” He Suggested That We Plant Trees Whose Shade We Did Not Want To Sit In, And I Had An Unfamiliar Rush Of Excitement.
When I Learned That He Had Attended Iit Bombay, The Mit Of India And Similarly Difficult To Enter, I Was Really Impressed. He Had Turned Down That Chance In Favour Of Becoming A Monk, Leaving Behind All My Friends And I Were Pursuing. Either He Was Insane Or He Had A Plan. My Whole Life, I Had Been Fascinated With Rags-to-riches Stories Of Individuals Who Had Gone From Nothing To Something. Now, I Was Seeing Someone Who Had Purposefully Done The Opposite For The First Time. He Had Abandoned The Lifestyle That The Public Had Advised Me To Aspire To.
However, He Didn’t Come Out As A Bitter Failure; Rather, He Seemed Happy, Conciliatory, And At Peace. He Seemed Happier Than Anybody I’ve Ever Met, In Fact. At The Age Of 18, I Had Come Into Contact With A Lot Of Wealthy Individuals. I’d Listened To A Lot Of Famous, Physically Fit, Attractive, Or All Three Of These People. However, I Doubt I’ve Ever Met Somebody Who Was Really Content. In Order To Express To Him How Amazing He Was And How Much He Had Inspired Me, I Had To Fight My Way Through The Crowds Afterward. “How Can I Stay With You Longer?” I Heard My Own Question. I Had The Want To Associate With Those Who Shared My Values Rather Than Those Who Had The Things I Desired. The Monk Informed Me That He Would Be Travelling And Giving Talks Around The United Kingdom That Week And That I Was Welcome To Attend The Rest Of His Events. Then I Did.
The Monk’s Name Was Gauranga Das, And My First Impression Of Him Was That He Was Doing Something Right. Later, I Would Learn That Science Supports That Impression. A Tibetan Monk By The Name Of Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche Travelled To The University Of Wisconsin-madison In 2002 From A Region Outside Of Kathmandu, Nepal, So That Scientists Could Observe His Brain Activity As He Meditated. The Researchers Covered The Monk’s Head With A Device Called An Eeg That Resembled A Shower Cap And Had More Than 250 Little Wires Protruding From It, Each Carrying A Sensor That A Lab Technician Attached To The Monk’s Scalp.
The Monk Had Accumulated 62,000 Hours Of Lifetime Meditation Practise At The Time Of The Study. The Monk Started The Meditation Protocol That The Researchers Had Created, Alternating Between One Minute Of Meditation On Compassion And A Thirty-second Rest Period, While A Group Of Scientists, Some Of Whom Were Experienced Meditators Themselves, Watched From A Control Room. A Translator Gave Him The Signal, And He Quickly Cycled Through This Pattern Four Times In A Row. The Eeg Recorded A Sudden And Massive Spike In Activity Almost At The Same Moment The Monk Started His Meditation, While The Researchers Watched In Awe.
The Scientists Reasoned That The Monk Must Have Moved Or Changed Positions In Order To Cause Such A Large, Sudden Bump, Yet To The Unaided Eye, He Seemed To Be Perfectly Still. Not Only Was The Monk’s Brain Activity Consistent, Repeatedly Switching From Activity To Rest, But He Also Didn’t Need A “Warm-up” Period, Which Was Remarkable. If You Have Ever Tried To Meditate Or At Least Calm Your Mind, You Are Aware That It Usually Takes Some Time To Stop The Stream Of Distracting Thoughts That Constantly Pass Through Your Mind. Rinpoche Didn’t Seem To Need Such A Period Of Adjustment.
He Seemed To Have The Ability To Enter And Exit A Potent Meditative State With The Ease Of Flipping A Switch. The Scans Of The Forty-one-year-old Monk’s Brain Showed Less Signs Of Ageing Than Those Of His Peers More Than Ten Years After These First Studies. He Had The Brain Of Someone Ten Years Younger, According To The Researchers. Buddhist Monk Matthieu Ricard’s Brain Was Scanned By Researchers, And After Discovering The Highest Level Of Gamma Waves—those Linked To Attention, Memory, Learning, And Happiness—ever Seen By Science, They Dubbed Him “The World’s Happiest Man.” Ricard Is Not The Only Monk Who Is On The Charts, Despite The Appearance Of An Anomaly. Twenty-one More Monks Who Participated In Different Types Of Meditation Practises While Having Their Brains Scanned Revealed Gamma Wave Levels That Spiked Higher And Lasted Longer (Even While Sleeping) Than Non-meditators.
Why Should We Adopt Monastic Thoughts? Michael Jordan Is A Good Place To Start If You Want To Dominate The Basketball Court. Elon Musk Is A Good Place To Go If You Want To Innovate. Beyoncé Is A Good Place To Look If You Want To Learn How To Perform. In Order To Develop Peace, Calm, And Purpose In Your Mind, What Should You Do? The Experts Are The Monks. “A Layperson Who Is Consciously Aiming To Be Continuously Alive In The Now Is A Monk,” Writes Brother David Steindl-rast, A Benedictine Monk And Co-founder Of Gratefulness.org. Monks Are Able To Resist Temptations, Refrain From Judging Others, Deal With Pain And Anxiety, Quiet The Ego, And Create Lives That Are Full Of Meaning And Purpose.
Why Can’t We Learn From The Peaceful, Joyful, And Purposeful People On Earth? Perhaps You Believe That Monks Can Easily Be Serene And At Ease. They Are Sequestered In Peaceful Environments Away From Their Jobs, Romantic Interests, And, Well, Rush Hour Traffic. Perhaps You’re Wondering How Thinking Like A Monk Might Benefit You In The Modern Day. First Off, Monks Aren’t Naturally Religious. They Are Individuals From A Variety Of Backgrounds Who Have Made The Decision To Transform Themselves. In A Previous Life, Matthieu Ricard, Dubbed “The Happiest Man In The World,” Was A Biologist. Andy Puddicombe, Cofounder Of The Meditation Software Headspace, Trained To Be In The Circus.
Similar To You, They Are Raised In Schools, Communities, And Cities. You Don’t Have To Go Around Barefoot, Light Candles In Your Home, Or Post Pictures Of Yourself In Tree Pose On A Mountaintop. Anyone May Adopt The Mentality Of A Monk. I Didn’t Grow Up In An Ashram, Unlike The Majority Of Monks Nowadays. I Spent Much Of My Childhood Acting In Ways That Were Not Monastic. I Was An Obedient Kid Until I Was Fourteen. Together With My Parents And Younger Sister, I Grew Up In North London. I’m An Indian From A Middle-class Family. My Parents, Like Many Others, Were Devoted To My Education And To Giving Me The Best Chance For A Successful Future. I Did Well In School, Avoided Trouble, And Made An Effort To Make Everyone Happy. But I Made A U-turn When I Started Secondary School.
I Was Bullied As A Child Because I Was Overweight, But I’ve Since Lost The Weight And Started Playing Rugby And Soccer. I Focused On Subjects Like Art, Design, And Philosophy That Conventional Indian Parents Don’t Often Value. All Of This Would Not Have Mattered, But I Also Began Mingling With The Incorrect Crowd. I Got Mixed Up In Some Very Bad Stuff. Drug Experimentation. Fighting. Drinking Excessively It Went Terribly. I Had Three Suspensions In High School. Finally, I Was Asked To Leave By The School. I Said, “I’ll Change. “I’ll Change If You Let Me Stay,” I Cleaned Up My Act, And The School Allowed Me To Stay. Finally, During My Time In College, I Began To Understand The Importance Of Perseverance, Discipline, And Sacrifice In The Pursuit Of One’s Goals.
The Issue Was That, At The Time, I Didn’t Have Any Goals Beyond The Typical Ones Of Getting A Good Job, Getting Married, And Perhaps Starting A Family. I Had A Sneaking Suspicion There Was Something More Going On, But I Had No Idea What. By The Time Gauranga Das Visited My School To Give A Speech, I Was Ready To Consider Fresh Perspectives, A Different Way Of Living, And A Different Path Than The One Everyone (Including Myself) Thought I Would Choose. I Wanted To Develop Myself. I Wanted To Experience Humility, Compassion, And Empathy Rather Than Just Learning About Them As Ideals. Discipline, Character, And Integrity Were Not Only Things I Wanted To Read About. I Wanted To Experience Them. I Juggled Two Worlds For The Next Four Years, Switching Between Meditation And Sleeping On The Floor And Going Between Bars To Steakhouses.
I Spent Time With My Friends And Family, Worked As An Intern At A Large Consulting Firm, And Studied Management With A Focus On Behavioural Science While I Was In London. I Also Read And Studied Ancient Texts In An Ashram In Mumbai, Where I Spent The Most Of My Summer And Christmas Vacations Staying With Monks. My Values Changed Over Time. I Noticed That I Was Drawn To Monks. I Really Wanted To Adopt A Monk-like Mindset. The Work I Was Doing In The Corporate World Seemed To Lack Purpose More And More Often. If It Had No Benefit To Anybody, What Was The Point? When I Received My College Degree.
I Exchanged My Suits For Robes And Joined The Ashram Where We Lived Out Of Gym Lockers And Slept On The Floor. I Spent Time Living And Exploring India, The Uk, And Europe. I Studied The Old Testament And Meditated For Many Hours Every Day. I Had The Chance To Serve With My Fellow Monks By Volunteering With A Food Programme That Distributes Over A Million Meals Daily And Helping With The Ongoing Conversion Of An Ashram In A Town Outside Of Mumbai Into An Eco-friendly Spiritual Retreat (The Govardhan Ecovillage) (Annamrita). Anyone Can If I Can Learn To Think Like A Monk.
