Scottish Author Graeme Armstrong Hails From Airdrie. His Adolescence Was Spent In The Gang Culture Of North Lanarkshire. He Studied English As A Major At The University Of Stirling, Where He Also Overcame Issues With Drug Addiction, Alcoholism, And Violence. He Later Went Back To Get His Master’s Degree In Creative Writing. He Is Working On His Phd At Strathclyde University Right Now.
His Popular First Book, “The Young Team,” Was Released By Picador In 2020 And Is Based On His Experiences. It Received The Somerset Maugham Award, The Betty Trask Award, And Was Named The Scots Book Of The Year For 2021. Synchronicity Films Is Now Working On The Adaptation For The Big Screen.
The Bbc Aired “Scotland The Rave,” A Documentary That Examined Scotland’s Rave And Pcdj Cultures, In 2021. It Was Later Nominated For A 2022 Bafta Scotland Award And An Rts Scotland Award.
Graeme Was Most Recently Recognised As One Of Granta’s “Best Of Young British Novelists” In 2023.
After Reading Gabriel Krauze’s Who They Was (2020) And Being Completely Blown Away, Here Is Another Masterpiece Inspired On Adolescent Gangs That Was Also Released In 2020.
Who They Was And The Young Team (2020) By Graeme Armstrong Have A Lot In Common. Both Writers Were Raised In Estates That Had High Rates Of Crime And Violence As Well As Little Prospects For The Residents. Both Stories Are Spooky And Heavily Autobiographical. In The End, Both Stories Are About Redemption.
Given That Both Authors Use A Scottish Accent, Parallels With Irvine Welsh’s Work Are Also Predictable. Despite The Fact That I Like Irvine Welsh, I Believe The Similarities Are Uninspired. A Separate Universe Is Captured By Graeme Armstrong. He Is One Of Them. Comparisons To The Cast Of “Trainspotting” Are Unimportant. This Is An Entirely Different Time Period And World From Leith In The 1990s.
The Young Team Is A Story Of Violence, Territorial Conflicts, Ranting, Drugs, And Alcohol Set In The Twenty-first Century. It Focuses On Young Lads From The Working Class Who Live On Lanarkshire Estates And Are Pressured To Uphold Their Elders’ Reputation As Rough Men. For The Majority, It Is A Road To Nowhere That Is Paved With Regret, Rage, And Sadness As Well As Burnouts, Corpses, And Casualties.
I Purchased A Hard Copy In Addition To The Graeme Armstrong-narrated Audiobook. Both Experiences Are Excellent. An Additional Element Of Immersion Is Created By Hearing The Lanarkshire Accent. Either Medium Works Well, But When Combined, They Are Invincible.
I Was Absorbed From Beginning To End. I Am Eager To See What Graeme Armstrong Produces Next Since He Is A Great New Talent.
Come Back To Who They Were. It Has Been Shortlisted For The Booker Prize And Must Have A Good Chance Of Winning; Nonetheless, It Is Unclear Why The Young Team Hasn’t Received Equal Levels Of Praise. Be Kind To Yourself And Read Both Novels.
Comparisons To Trainspotting Are Unavoidable Given That It Is Written In A Dialect, Is Located In Scotland, And Explores Drug Culture. The Main Themes Of Both Stories Include Growing Up, Avoiding Lower Class Plans, And Escaping The Grip That Drugs Have On You. However, Armstrong’s Lanarkshire In The Middle Of The 2000s And Welsh’s Leith In The ’90s Represent Two Distinct Ideas.
Putting That Aside, The Young Team Is Really Realistic And Delves Into The Details Of Daily Living, Unlike Trainspotting, Which I Also Believe Is Wonderful. It Is Based On My Own Lived Experience Of Gang Culture In Lanarkshire, Just Outside Of Glasgow’s East End, And Revolves On Gang Strife, Violence, And Narcotics, According To Graeme Armstrong’s Description. The Stark Realism Is Primarily Enhanced By The Autobiographical Aspect. The Protagonist Alan ‘azzy’ Williams And His Life In The New Team, A Gang Of Young People From The Estate, As Well As Their Constant Conflicts With Rival Gang The Young Toi, Are At The Focus Of This Story. Alan Was Around 13 Years Old When It Takes Place.
If The Reader Has Some Familiarity With The Scottish Accent And Pronunciation, It Shouldn’t Be Too Difficult To Read This Book Since It Is Entirely Written In Dialect, Although A Significantly Different Dialect Than Trainspotting. It Doesn’t Take Long To Change Your Reading In Order To Get The Rhythm. Without The Use Of Dialect, I’m Not Sure Whether The Novel Would Have The Same Effect Since, In My Opinion, It Helps To Immerse The Reader In The Action.
The Most Engaging Part Of This Book Is Describing Social Culture By Demonstrating To The Reader The Breadth Of Knowledge That Azzy Gains As He Matures And Outlining The Justification For His Behaviour As He Makes His Way Through A Challenging Existence. In Addition To The Obvious Themes Of Alcoholism, Drug Abuse (Though Maybe Not The Hard Narcotics Welsh’s Lads Are Doing), And Violence, Other Issues Facing Young People In This Environment Include Unemployment, Poverty, Mental Illness, Relationships, A Lack Of Opportunities, And Pressure To Fit In. In Azzy’s Situation, There Is Disparity Between His Internal Ideas And What He Is Willing To Say.
It Is Difficult To Not Feel Compassion For People Who Are Constrained By This Existence And Respect For Those Who Manage To Escape It.
Normally, I Try Not To Read Too Many Reviews Before I Write My Own, But I Did Read A Few Reviews For This One Since I Wasn’t Sure Where To Go With It. It Is Evident That Readers With More Exposure To And Familiarity With The Locale And The Characters Would Likely Like This Novel. It Speaks A Lot About The Author’s Abilities That Readers Can Identify So Strongly With The Characters And Way Of Life, Demonstrating That The Novel Is Grounded In Reality And Is Genuine Rather Than A Made-up Or Overly Inflated Chain Of Events.
With Little Over 1600 Reviews And An Average Rating Of 4.5, It Is Obvious That People Are Praising This Book Highly (Trainspotting Has Approximately 160,000 Ratings With An Average Rating Of 4.08). The Audience Size Will Unavoidably Be Impacted By Dialect, Yet This Novel Merits Greater Attention.
This Book Is Difficult To Put Down Because Of The Outstanding Writing, The Fast Pace, And The Way The Suspense Builds In Anticipation. The Novel Also Offers Optimism, Without Giving Too Much Away. It Provides A Route Out, Indicating That The Disenfranchised Have Some Hope, But It Also Demonstrates The Harm Done Along The Road, Since Those Who Are Unable To Transition From Childhood To Adulthood Remain Imprisoned.
