I Originally Saw The Movie Many Years Ago And Was Completely Enthralled By The Plot, Which Is How I Discovered Stephen King. The Shining Was The First Book Of His That I Ever Picked Up. His Writing Style And The Brilliantly Simple But Terrifying Manner He Infuses Every Page Of His Novels With Spine-chilling Terror Immediately Captured My Heart. Years Later, While Watching An Episode Of Friends, I Decided To Reread The Shining After Hearing Joey, Played By Matt Leblanc, Describe How It Was His Favourite Book And How It Worries Him So Much That He Must Store It In His Freezer.

He Runs With Dick Halloran, The Hotel Cook, At The Overlook, And He Instantly Recognises Danny As Someone Else With “The Shining.” He Cautions Danny That The Hotel Has Seen Some Horrible Things Over The Years, And Although It Could Make Him See Things, What He Sees Won’t Really Harm Him.

But Even If Danny Briefly Takes Over As The Primary Character, Jack Is The Actual Focus Of The Shining. Jack Has A Bad Temper And Is An Alcoholic. He Accidently Fractured Danny’s Arm A Year Ago While Intoxicated. After Assaulting One Of His Pupils While Completely Sober, He Lost His Previous Employment. If You’ve Seen Jack Nicholson’s Depiction Of Him In Kubrick’s Film, You Would Assume That This Would Render Jack Wholly Unlikeable And Unsympathetic. However, Jack Is Not A Horrible Guy In Reality. He Was Mistreated As A Youngster And Battles The Need To Harm Others That He Developed As An Adult. He Does, In Fact. He Persuades His Wife To Give Him One More Opportunity, And If Not For The Darkness That Lurks In The Overlook Hotel, He Most Likely Would Have Succeeded.

Anyone Should Be Able To See That The Overlook Hotel Is A Metaphor Even If This Is Undoubtedly A Novel Of Otherworldly Terror. It Is The Tale Of Jack Torrance, Who Battles His Alcoholism And His Violent Tendencies But Discovers That The Monster Is Too Great For Him To Defeat. But It Never Excuses Jack For His Deeds. King Makes It Apparent That, Despite His Weakness, Jack Had Several Opportunities To Halt His Decline. It Begins With Him Losing His Anger And Grows Until He Hears Voices Ordering Him To Murder His Family, But It Happens Gradually, And Jack Is Complicit In His Own Downfall. Like Any Alcoholic, You May Feel Awful For Him And Understand That He Really Would Be A Fine Man If Not For The Negative Influences, But You Still Have To Admit That He Set One Foot On That Road, Then Another, And Another.

King Excels At Doing This. He Excels At The Bloody, Violent Supernatural Horror, But He Also Does A Wonderful Job Of Incorporating Complex, Tangled Human Connections Into His Narrative.

It Should Be Remembered That King Has Previously Spoken Openly About His Personal Battles With Alcoholism And Drug Addiction. King Also Wrote The Shining When He Was Still Heavily Abusing Alcohol. You Decide If This Is Irony Or Self-awareness.

However, There Are Several Things He Struggles With. One Of Them Is Kids Who Write. 5-year-old Danny Torrance. He Is Supposedly Brilliant And Endowed With Psychic Abilities, But Even So, Some Of His Awareness Of What Is Happening Around Him Goes Well Beyond Preternatural Awareness. At The Conclusion, When He Is Confronted By His Psychotic, Possessed Father, He Delivers A Soliloquy That Is, Quite Frankly, Simply Unfathomable Coming From A Five-year-old.

King Has A Propensity To Exploit Unpleasant Clichés In His Sincere Efforts To Offer Genuine And Empathetic Portraits Of Victims Of Abuse And Bigotry Since He Too Has Typical White Liberal Guilt, Which He Has Openly Acknowledged. Dick Halloran, A Classic Example Of A Magical Negro, Serves As A Good Example Of This. Although King Was Perhaps Pretty Progressive And At Least Well-intentioned In 1977, He Continues To Operate In This Manner Almost Every Time A Black Character Appears In One Of His Stories.

The Shining Has Everything Fans Of King’s Works Like While Eschewing Several Of His More Unpleasant Tendencies (Such As Excessive Padding Or The Unnecessary Usage Of Aliens).
