“Dave Succeeds In Creating A Work Of Home Suspense That Simultaneously Unnerves And Reassures The Reader. Discussion Questions & Topics
A Woman And Daughter Search For A Loving Husband And Father Who Has Vanished.
Owen Michaels, Hannah Hall’s Husband Of One Year, And She Are Madly In Love. Bailey, His 16-year-old Daughter, Has Made It Quite Plain That She Is Not Happy With Her New Stepmother, And She Is Also Desperate To Win Bailey Over. Even With The Turbulence, The Family Is Generally Content. They Reside On A Gorgeous Houseboat In Sausalito, Where Hannah Turns Wood And Sells Her Creations To Wealthy Customers. Owen Works For The Thriving Computer Company The Shop. But When Hannah Gets A Message That Reads “Protect Her” And Is Unable To Contact Owen On The Phone, Their Lives Are Completely Upended. Then There Is The Bag Of Cash That Bailey Discovers In Her Locker At School And The Unsettling Information That The Ceo Of The Store Has Been Detained. Hannah Discovers That The Fbi Has Been Looking Into The Company For Over A Year Because They Released A Cutting-edge Piece Of Software To The Public Before It Was Completely Functioning, Inflating Their Financial Records. Hannah Is Certain That Her Husband Is Innocent Of The Scam, Despite The U.s. Marshal In Charge Of The Investigation Saying Owen Isn’t A Suspect. But, Hannah Is Unsure Of Who She Can Rely On, So She And Bailey Decide To Search For Any Hints That May Point Them In The Direction Of Owen. They Must Also Develop Mutual Trust. Author Dave Mixes In A Little Danger And A Few Shocks As Hannah’s Story Switches Between The Past And The Present, Describing Both Her Early Days With Owen And Her Current Search For Him. Yet, The Connection Between Hannah And Bailey, Which Develops Throughout The Narrative And Is At Times Painful And Infuriating But Always Genuine, Serves As Its True Driving Force.
Reese Witherspoon Just Chose Laura Dave’s The Last Thing He Told Me For Her Book Club Selection. I Decided To Read This Since Reese’s Book Club Selections Tend To Be Faster-paced, Breezier Readings, Which I Was In The Mood For. I’m Pleased To Say That This Book Did Not Dissapoint.
The Last Thing He Told Me Is A Fast-paced Page-turner With Some Family Drama Aspects Centred On Self-sacrifice And The Connection Between A Stepmother, Hannah, And Her Stepdaughter, Bailey. It Was Good To Witness A Pleasant Stepmother-stepdaughter Connection For A Change Since Stepmothers In Literature, In My Opinion, Are Either Underutilised Or Nasty (A La The Evil Stepmother Cliche).
Bailey’s Father Owen Goes Missing In The Last Thing He Told Me, And Hannah’s Search For Him Uncovers A Labyrinth Of Unanswered Questions And Discloses Truths From His History.
While The Book Is Billed As A Mystery, I Believe It To Be More Of A Thriller Since There Aren’t Many Hidden Clues. Instead, You’re Keeping Track Of How The Novel’s Tension Unfolds.
Having Said That, The Last Thing He Told Me Does A Great Job With Its Suspense Elements. It Is Well Timed, Providing Exactly The Proper Amount Of Suspense And Information At The Appropriate Points To Create Gratifying Builds In Tension And Resolve. When You’re Always Learning New Information And Having New Questions Arise, It Never Gets Boring.
This Made For A Really Quick And Interesting Read For Me. There Aren’t Any Obvious Story Gaps Or Loose Ends In The Book’s Structure. Instead, Everything In This Suspenseful Story Works Together Seamlessly, With Just Enough Intricacies To Keep You On The Edge Of Your Seat.
Overall, I Like The Book’s Quick Page-turner Vibe, And As I Said Above, I Thought The Thriller Elements Were Extremely Effectively Done.
But Where It Fell A Bit Flat For Me Were The Family Drama Elements. The Main Character Is Basically A Selfless, Flawless Stepmother, And Although Ideal Personalities Are Simple To Cheer For, They Also Provide Little Space For Character Development.
Perfect Individuals, In My View, Also Produce Dull Family Dramas Since People Are Never Completely Flawless In Real Life, Which Adds To The Difficulties Of Certain Circumstances. Substantive Family Dramas Are About Figuring Out How To Deal With People’s Flaws.
In Essence, The Family Drama In This Novel Has A Little Bit Of A Hallmark Feel To It. It’s Undeniably A Part Of The Novel, But I Wasn’t Sure Whether I Actually Learned Anything From It. That Might Be Read As A Tale Of Parental Sacrifice, I Suppose, But To Me, It Seemed Hollow. If You Have Any Opinions On How This Connection Was Handled, Please Share Them In The Comments Because I’m Really Very Interested Whether Others Felt The Same Way.
The Good News Is That I Didn’t Find The Family Turmoil To Be Distracting From The Rest Of The Novel, So You Could Easily Enjoy This Book Even If You’re Not Very Interested In It For That Reason.
