The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a fantasy novel by V. E. Schwab, published by Tor Books on October 6, 2020. Addie and Luc develop a relationship for two decades, but it ends abruptly when Luc asks her to surrender her soul. In 2014, Addie meets Henry Strauss, who can remember her and speak her name. Luc visits him and grants his wish, allowing him to remember Addie. Henry publishes her stories in a book, which is an instant success.
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was a New York Times Best Seller for 37 consecutive weeks. It was praised for its attention to art, its momentum, contemplative story, explorations of identity, and careful attention to detail. eOne will produce a film adaptation of the novel, with Alan Siegel, Danielle Robinson, Gerard Butler, and Schwab acting as producers. It was nominated for the 2020 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel, and the film is set to be directed by Augustine Frizzell. In the 18th Century, Addie LaRue makes a deal with the devil and trades her soul for immortality. Over 300 years, no one remembers her and she exists only as a muse for artists. Luc, her only companion, visits her every year on the anniversary of their deal.
This book is a fantasy novel with an immortal main character and frequent dealings with the devil. It is a great blend of both historical and contemporary fiction, with the more fantastical aspects. Addie is an unforgettable character with an unforgettable story, featuring glimpses into the past and a love story. Henry symbolizes the light, while Luc symbolizes the darkness. Addie is drawn to them both.
The book follows Adeline “Addie” LaRue, a young woman born 300 years ago in Villon, France. In present day, Addie survives by stealing and sneaking into others’ apartments. The devil appears yearly and takes on the form of Luc, an imaginary stranger Addie once daydreamed about. Addie and Henry make a deal with the devil to be loved in exchange for their souls. Henry’s exes ask for a second chance and he’s offered a job he’s unqualified for.
In 1914, Luc and Addie fall for each other and end up in an affair. In 1980, Addie asks Luc to release her from her deal, which requires her to surrender. In the present, Addie learns that Henry’s deal is only for a year and he has a month left. When she is 23, she signs away her soul and receives eternal life in return. In 1698, Addie is 7 years old and goes with her father to visit the city of Le Mans. Addie is a 12-year-old girl who longs for adventure and visits Estele, an old woman who tells her about the old gods. Addie visits Fred and Rise and Shine, where she finds her ring, which she can’t get rid of.
In 1714, Addie, a 23-year-old widower with three children, offers her ring to the gods in exchange for her soul. When she returns home, no one can remember her and she is found by Isabelle, a widower with two sons and a baby daughter. A stranger grants her wish of eternal life for as long as she wants it, but she realizes there is a major caveat: nobody remembers her. Addie is a transvestite who cannot forge new relationships or rekindle old ones due to her inability to forge lasting human connections. She learns to cope by serving as a muse and leaving her mark on the works of many famous artists and musicians. The story follows Addie LaRue, a young bookseller who makes a deal with Luc to be loved by everyone who meets him for a year, in exchange for Henry being allowed to live out his natural life. Addie makes a new deal with Luc: she will be Luc’s exclusive romantic partner for as long as he will have her, in exchange for Henry being permitted to live out his natural life.
Adeline is seven and has begged her father to go with him to market. Adeline is leaving Villon for the first time and looks back at her mother, who is gone. They reach the edge of the village, the farthest she has ever gone before, and the cart hits a divot in the road, shaking as if it has crossed a threshold. Adeline holds her breath, expecting to feel some rope draw tight inside her.
Adeline is on a day’s ride to Le Mans with her mother and father. On the way, Adeline hears stories of palaces and kings, gold and glamour, masquerade balls, and cities full of splendor. Adeline wonders if her father tells these stories when he is alone or if they are just for her.
Adeline and Maxime arrive in Le Mans, a city a hundred times the size of Villon. Adeline’s father guides them through a maze of crowded streets, and Adeline marvels at the marketplace. Her father’s work is beautiful, with toys for sale and wooden figures as small as rolls of bread. Adeline’s favorite trinket is a ring carved by her father when she was born, and she wears it like a talisman. Adeline’s father gives her a copper sol and allows her to buy anything she likes. She settles on a journal, parchment bound with waxy thread, and her father shows her how to use charcoal to draw a bird in the corner of the page. By the time they return home, Adeline is already a different version of herself.
Addie LaRue is a young woman who makes a Faustian bargain to live forever and is cursed to be forgotten. Schwab’s book is a magnificent read, with every word thought out and small things becoming big things later on. Addie LaRue is a complex, intriguing, heartbreaking and gorgeous character from 1700 to 2014 who is hardened, independent and unique.
Every event that happens to her builds her character, and she is not a perfect person, but she is real. She is one of the most layered characters I have ever read about. V.E. Schwab’s book is a good choice for those who love art and history, and the relationship between Addie and Luc is interesting. Henry is a well-written and complex character, but he is less interesting than Addie. V.E. Schwab also writes about sexuality and non-straight characters. V.E. Schwab’s book is about sex, love, sacrifices, history, art, and Addie, one of the most complex and beautiful characters ever written. It is about love, sacrifices, history, art, and Addie, one of the most complex and beautiful characters ever written. It is a stand-alone and the whole story is finished perfectly. It takes the reader apart like no other. V.E.
Schwab’s “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue” is a fantasy novel that explores the consequences of dealing with darkness. Addie, a dreamer and artist, makes a deal with Luc, the god of darkness, to free herself from belonging to anyone. After three centuries, Addie meets a man who remembers her and they deepen a connection. Addie and Henry’s lives intertwine, but Luc stands over them both, “a storm, bottled into skin.”
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a novel about Addie LaRue, who has grown to depend on Luc, the only person who knows her. Schwab’s flashes forward and back in time create questions that need answers, and Addie learns more about her curse, Henry, and Luc. The ending will divide readers, but the novel remains one of the most propulsive, compulsive and captivating novels in recent memory. Adeline is desperate to escape a wedding she didn’t want and a life spent trapped in a small town, so she made a deal to surrender her soul when she no longer wants to live. However, freedom comes at a cost, and Adeline is forgotten every time she slips out of sight. When she meets Henry, the first person in 300 years who can remember her, she can’t walk away. The story unfolds in multiple timelines as Addie learns the rules of her curse and the whims of her captor, while both Addie and the reader get to know Henry and understand what sets him apart. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a novel about Adeline LaRue, who signs away her soul to the devil, Luc, in 1714. The novel rose to popularity among young adults and tied up philosophical themes of existentialism and free will with romance and adventure, but it fell flat for me.
