How Do Families Work? A Father, Mother, Boy, Girl, Cat, And Dog Were Said To Reside In A Home With A Garden At One Time. However, As Society Has Evolved, So Have Families, And Now There Are Practically As Many Distinct Types Of Families As There Are Colours In The Rainbow. These Families May Range From A Mother And Father Or A Single Parent To Two Mothers Or Two Fathers, From A Mixed-race Family To Children With Several Mothers And Fathers, To Families With A Handicapped Member. Through The Eyes Of Children, Mary Hoffman Explores The Many Facets Of Family Life, Including Homes, Food, Celebrations, Schools, Holidays, Transportation, Work, Extended Families, Languages, Hobbies, Pets, And Family Trees. She Comes To The Conclusion That, For Most People, Their Own Family Is The Best Of All. This Book Offers A New, Upbeat Perspective On Modern Families Via The Charming Illustrations Of Ros Asquith.

This Book Celebrates All Of The Different Sorts Of Families There Are. It Starts With A Stereotypical Family Of Blonde, White Mom And Dad, Two Kids (A Boy And A Girl), A Dog And A Cat. They Even Come Complete With The Picket Fence And Apple Tree. Turn The Page And You Are In Reality With Families Of Different Colors, Single Parents, Grandparents, Two Mothers, Two Fathers, And Adoptive Families. The Book Then Moves On To Family Sizes, Different Homes, Different Ways To Go To School, Different Ways Parents Work, The Holidays Families Take, The Food We Eat, Clothes, Pets, Hobbies, And Much More. The Book Ends By Expressing A Very Important Message That Families Change. So What Does Your Family Look Like Today?
Another Facet Of This Book Is The Celebration Of Families Of Different Incomes And Wealth. Nothing Is Put Down, Just Mentioned As Different From One Another. Children May Not Notice The Differences, But If You Are A Child Struggling With Poverty, It Is Good To See Yourself Represented Here Matter-of-factly And Honestly. Hoffman’s Entire Text Is Written In This Straight Forward Way, She Is Inclusive, Expansive And Above Everything Non-judgmental.
Asquith’s Illustrations Have A Nice Sense Of Humor That Keeps The Book From Being Too Earnest. They Have A Quirky Feel, A Silliness That Makes The Book A Pleasure To Read.
Every Library Needs A Copy Of This Warm, Welcoming Book Where All Children Will See Parts Of Themselves Represented. Appropriate For Ages 4-7.
Hi, Good Morning. I’m Cath Hak From Sex Ed Rescue And I Want To Talk To You About This Book Which Is About Families. So It’s Called The Great Big Book Families By Mary Hoffman. Now I Think It’s An English Book. Yes, It Is.
So It Came Out In 2010, It’s Been Out For A Few Years. And Look, She Has Got Other Books As Well, Books Off Feelings The Colour Green And Other Ones As Well Since Then. Why Do I Like This Book? Because When Kids Are Younger, Part Of What We Talk To Them About For Sexuality And Relationships, Education Is About Differences In Families. So Kids Grow Up In Their Own Family, But Then They Go To School Or They Start Noticing That Other Families Are Different.
Or Maybe They’ve Got Two Moms And All Of Their Friends At School Have Got A Mum And A Dad And Then They Start To Think Why Am I Different? What’s Wrong With Me? Because Ultimately We All Want To Fit In And Conform. It’s Just Part Of How Children Develop. So Reading Books About This Is Fantastic Because It Helps Them Be More Understanding And Accepting Of Their Friends Who May Be A Little Bit Different, But Also More Accepting About How They Feel About Themselves And Their Own Family.
So This One Is In Particular About Families, But It Also Has Messages About Diversity. And I Really Like This Book Because Visually It’s Just I Wish I Found Them When My Kids Were Young. Now Mine Are Now Twelve And Age, But My Eight Year Old Did Enjoy This Book, Crazy Teachers A Little Bit Like The Back Hole, As In, Look, I Didn’t Notice This Before, But She Does The Cat Thing, So Try Find The Cat On Every Page. So It Starts Off With Most Families, Looks Like This Is Ironic, This Is What Our Family Is. A Dad, A Mum, A Boy, A Girl, A Cat And A Dog And Numerous Fish.
But Then Talks About The Fact That They’re All Very Different. And This Is With Younger Children, A Lot Of The Books I’m Not A Teacher, So I’m Not An Expert On How Children Learn, But A Lot Of The Books Will Repeat The Message In Different Ways. But This One Repeats A Message In A Really Interesting Way. So Lots Of Different Examples. So They Might Live Just With Their Daddy Or Their Mummy Or Their Grandma And Grandpa, Although Might Have Two Mummies Or Two Daddies And Some Are Adopted, Fostered, So Very Diverse.
So Who’s In Your Family? Some Might Have Lots Of Brothers And Sisters And Aunts And Uncles And Even Law. But Sometimes You Can Be A Family With Just Dad And Me. Lots Of Homes. So They Might Live In Big Houses Or In Tiny Flats And Some People Can’t Find Anywhere To Live.
So Lots Of Different Examples Of All The Houses That They Live In. Some Kids Go To School, Some Are Taught At Home. Some Won’t Go To School And Others Are Too Little To Go To School. Jobs. In Some Families, Everyone Has A Job.
In Others, Only One Person Goes To Work. And I Love This. Dad Staying At Home And Mum Going Off. Also Very The Colours. It’s Not All People With One Colour Scheme.
Very Culturally Diverse. Some Work From Home And Some Can’t Get Jobs At All. So Takes Into Consideration All Situation. Holidays. Some Go On Exotic Holidays.
Some Stay Close And Some Go To Other Countries. My Kids Go To A School Which Is Very Culturally Diverse. I Think It’s About 70 Different Cultures. And A Lot Of Their Friends Are Constantly Going Overseas Because They’re Having To Go Back And Visit Family. Some Go On Day Trips And Not Everyone Goes On Holidays.
Some Have A Holiday At Home. We’ve Even Got A Kid With A Disability Here In A Frame. Food. Some Mums And Dads Are Good Cooked. Some Prefer To Buy Their Food Already Cooked.
Some Grow Their Own. Some Buy It From The Shop Ready Cooked. So Clothing. Some Get Hands Me Down. Some Go To Charity Shops.
Some Like To Dress Any Way They Please. So Very Diverse. Pets. Some Think That Their Pets Are Part Of The Family, Some Think They Are. Every Family Somehow Can’t Have Pets But It Doesn’t Stop Them From Dreaming.
Birthdays. Some Families Make A Fuss, Some Families Don’t. What Else Have We Got? Hobbies. Some Families, Everyone Has The Same Hobby.
So They Might All Play Music Or They All Make Different Things. What Else We Got? Transport. Some Families Walk, Some Go To The Shop, Some Drive. We Had A Conversation Last Night About The Fact That We Walk A Lot Even Though We’ve Got A Car.
I’d Love To Be Carless, But We Talked About The Fact That Some Families Do And Don’t And Why. So Great Starting Conversations At The Dinner Table. And I’d Love To Get A Copy Of Her Feelings Book As Well. So In Some Families Everyone Shares Their Feelings And Some Families Are More Shy. Some Families Feel Differently.
It Just Goes On. But Look, It’s Beautiful. So Finish. That Conclusion Is Lovely As Well. So Families Can Be Big, Small, Happy, Sad, Rich, Poor, Loud, Quiet, Cross, Good Tempered, Worry Or Happy Go Lucky.
Most Families Are All Of These Some Things, Some Of The Time. What’s Yours Like Today? So Showing That It Changes. Look, This Is Lovely. This Is Probably One Of The Best Books That I’ve Come Across For Families.
But Look, We All Have Different Tastes As To What We Like For A Book, So One Definitely Worth Checking Out. Okay, I Hope That Helps. Cheers.
