I’ll See Them In The Shadows Of My Unreflective Life, Through A Glass Darkly, And When I Can’t See Them Clearly, I Can’t Teach Them Well. I Cannot Understand My Subject At The Deepest Levels Of Embodied, Personal Meaning When I Do Not Know Myself. I Won’t Be Able To Know It Except In An Abstract, Remote Manner Using A Collection Of Ideas That Are As Far From Reality As I Am From My Own Personal Truth.
We Need To Explore A New Area In Our Investigation Of Effective Teaching: The Interior World Of The Teaching Profession. Three Crucial Paths—intellectual, Emotional, And Spiritual—must Be Taken In Order To Fully Map That Terrain, And None May Be Disregarded. When Teaching Is Reduced To Intellect, It Becomes A Cold Abstraction; When Teaching Is Reduced To Emotions, It Becomes Narcissistic; When Teaching Is Reduced To The Spiritual, It Loses Its Connection To The Outside World. For Completeness, Intellect, Emotion, And Spirit Depend On One Another. They Are Intertwined In The Human Self And In The Best Forms Of Education, And We Must Do The Same In Our Pedagogical Discourse.
By Intellectual, I Mean The Way We Approach Learning And Teaching, The Structure And Content Of Our Conceptions Of How People Acquire Knowledge And Learn, As Well As The Characteristics Of Our Students And The Topics We Study. The Way We And Our Students Feel When We Teach And Learn—feelings That May Either Enlarge Or Diminish The Exchange Between Us—is What I Mean When I Say “Emotional.” By Spiritual, I Mean The Many Ways That We Satiate The Heart’s Need To Be A Part Of Life’s Greater Whole—a Want That Inspires Both Love And Work, Especially The Work Known As Teaching.
