   John Durbeyfield is a poor peasant from Marlott and his wife, Joan, is content with a life of bare sustenance and simple pleasures. Tess embarks on a journey to claim kinship with the D’Urberville family near Tantridge, but the misfortune is less terrifying to them than it would have been to a striving family. Nobody blames Tess as she blames herself. Tess is offered a job and her parents encourage her to take it, but she finds Alec repugnant and pursues him relentlessly. When she confronts him, Alec plays the victim and engages in emotional blackmail. When a jealous rival challenges Tess to a fight, Alec rescues her and they ride off together into the night. Later editions left the incident deliberately vague. Tess, a child, has a difficult life ahead of her and has accepted that love and marriage cannot be for her. At a leap, she changes from simple girl to complex woman, with symbols of reflectiveness and a note of tragedy in her voice. Her eyes become larger and more eloquent, and her soul is that of a woman who has survived turbulent experiences.
