One Thought Scares Me…: We Teach Our Children What We Wish Them To Know; We Don’t Teach Our Children What We Don’t Wish Them To Know Book By Richard Dreyfuss PDF Free Download, Overview, Reviews, Get Book, Summary, Quotes, More By Author.
We’ve Allowed The Definition Of America To Become Conjectural. It Might Still Be Possible.
The Demise Of Our Democratic Republic Shouldn’t Come As A Surprise. We Need Training To Fly An Aircraft, And We Need Medical School To Practise Medicine. Yet Despite Being The Result Of The Most Revolutionary Political Philosophy In Human History, We Still Expect The People Of America To Exercise All Of Their Citizenship’s Rights Without Any Formal Education.
The Constitution And Bill Of Rights Are No Longer Taught To Our Youngsters. The Ideals Of The Enlightenment That Support Them Are Not Taught. The Critical Thinking Abilities And Mental Flexibility Required For Our Own Sovereignty Are Seldom Taught. We No Longer Teach Civics, Thus We Are Unable To Engage In Decent Political Discourse. If We Don’t Take Action, The American Experiment Could Collapse.
Richard Dreyfuss Has Been A Strong Supporter Of Civic Education. In His Most Recent Book, One Thought Scares Me, He Describes How The Decline In Many Facets Of Our Lives Over The Last Fifty Years Has Been Caused By The Absence Of Civics Teaching In American Schools. Additionally, It Demonstrates The Way To Reclaim Our American Ideals.
Richard Dreyfuss Was Born In Brooklyn, New York, In 1947, And When He Was Eight Years Old, He Started Acting At The Los Angeles Jewish Community Centre. He Worked In Theatre In Los Angeles Starting In 1963 And Appeared On Television For Almost Ten Years In Series Including Bewitched, The Big Valley, And Others. In The Early 1970s, He Began Acting In Large-scale Parts In Films Like American Graffiti, The Apprenticeship Of Duddy Kravitz, And Jaws. His Portrayal In The Goodbye Girl Earned Him The Oscar In 1978. He Has 45 Years Of Performing Experience In American Theatre And Movies. In His Own Life, Dreyfuss Has Launched A Multi-state Initiative To Promote, Resurrect, Elevate, And Improve Civics Education In American Schools. His Advocacy Of Privacy, Freedom Of Expression, Democracy, And Personal Responsibility Has Made Him A Prominent Voice On The Subject Of How The Media Shapes Public Policy, Law, And Opinion.
A Non-profit, Non-partisan Organisation Called The Dreyfuss Civics Initiative Was Established In 2008. In Order To Equip Future Generations With The Critical-thinking Abilities They Need To Realise The Immense Promise Of American Citizenship, It Intends To Reinvigorate The Teaching Of Civics In American Public School. Its Initiatives Support The Improvement Of Civic Education, Civic Virtue, And The Contribution That People May Make To The Prosperity Of The Us.
One Thought Scares Me…: A Conversation Is Being Held At Roosevelt House, And We’re Excited About It. Actor And Activist Richard Dreyfuss Is The Author Of The Book We Teach Our Children What We Wish Them To Know; We Don’t Teach Our Children What We Don’t Wish Them To Know. Dreyfuss Argues That The Lack Of Civics Education Over The Past Fifty Years Has Contributed To The Decline Of American Life And That Bringing Civics Back Into The Classroom Can Help The Nation Reclaim Its Most Valuable Ideals In This Urgent Call To Reconsider And Reestablish The Role Of Civics Education In American Schools. Harold Holzer, The Director Of Roosevelt House, And Jonathan F. Fanton Will Be Talking With The Author.
Without Instruction, We Cannot Operate An Aircraft… Without Completing Medical School, We Cannot Practise Medicine… Yet, According To The Argument Made In One Thought Scares Me, Which Is Delivered With The Force Of An Oscar-winning Performance, We Expect The Citizens Of The United States To Exercise All Of Their Citizenship’s Rights Without Any Formal Education. Dreyfuss Examines The Potentially Grave Repercussions Of Not Teaching Children The Bill Of Rights Or The Constitution, The Enlightenment Principles That Support Them, Or The Critical Thinking Abilities That, In His Opinion, Are Essential To Our Sovereignty. He Also Examines The Values That Underlie Them. He Claims That The Failure Of The American Experiment As Well As The Elimination Of Peaceful Political Dissent From American Discourse Are Among Those Potentially Disastrous Effects.
Richard Dreyfuss Was Born In Brooklyn In 1947, Spent Some Time There, And Started Acting When He Was Eight Years Old At The Los Angeles Jewish Community Centre. He Has Performed On Stage, In Television Shows, And In Some Of The Most Renowned And Well-liked Films Ever Made, Including American Graffiti, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Jaws, Mr. Holland’s Opus (Nominated For An Oscar), And The Goodbye Girl, For Which He Won Both The Oscar And Golden Globe For Best Actor. He Has Also Appeared On Stage, In Television Shows, And On The Big Screen. He Has Recently Portrayed Historical Personalities Including Bernard Madoff, Dick Cheney, And Alexander Haig. In His Own Life, Actor Richard Dreyfuss Has Launched A National Campaign To Support, Promote, Elevate, And Improve Civics Education In American Schools. Additionally, He Has Taken On The Role Of An Advocate For Privacy, Freedom Of Speech, Democracy, And Personal Responsibility By Writing And Speaking On The Subject Of How The Media Affects Legislation, Policy, And Public Opinion. In Order To Revitalise Civics In School Curriculum, He Founded The Dreyfuss Civics Initiative In 2008. It Is A Non-profit, Non-partisan Organisation. Dreyfuss Is Back At Roosevelt House For A Second Time.
The Jonathan F. Fanton Director Of The Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute Has Been Harold Holzer Since 2015. He Is A Prolific Writer Who Has Written Over 50 Books. He Was Awarded The 2008 National Humanities Medal And The 2015 Gilder Lehrman Prize. The Presidents Vs. The Press: The Endless Battle Between The White House And The Media, From The Founders To Fake News Is His Most Recent Book. Together, Holzer And Dreyfuss Have Appeared In Several Dramatised Historical Programmes Around The Nation.
Dreyfuss Is Right When He Claims That Immigrants Have Always Had One Thing In Common: They Always Came From Places That Were Worse. They Came Here To Escape Oppressive And Monarchical Governments, As Well As Poverty And A Lack Of Control Over Their Lives.
For Instance, England Once Deployed Agents To Knock Out Men In Bars Who Woke Up Aboard Ships Without Saying Goodbye To Their Families When It Desired A Navy. That, In My Opinion, Is A Large Part Of What Is Going On In Russia Right Now With Putin’s Sacrifice Of More Than 100k Soldiers, And For What? Numerous People Decide To Immigrate To This Young Nation In Response To Such Atrocities In Order To Experience Freedom, To Be Themselves In A Good, Hardworking, And Caring Way, Not To Be Usurped But To Assist In Its Development. They Used To Come Here, At Least, To Cooperate Amicably Within The Confines Of A Free Society.
However, Those Ideals Of Liberty And Freedom Stood In The Way Of Obstinate Autocrats Who Insisted On Having Their Way In All Matters; As A Result, Civics Education Was No Longer Taught In American Schools. Instead, Social Studies—a Second-rate Mention Of Things That Sound Good But Don’t Include Any Of The Deep Information Found In The Constitution And Bill Of Rights—is What Kids Have Been Exposed To For The Last 50 Years. Today’s Voters Run For Office With Little Understanding Of What Political Service Is, What It Requires, Or How It Should Benefit The Common Man. Instead, We Have Governments That Have Been Consumed By Greed And Individuals Who Lack The Authority Or Qualifications To Know What To Do About It.
At The Very Least, Civics Ought To Be Taught Once More In The Grades Before High School Graduation. What Is Civics Exactly? It Is Described As The Study Or Science Of Citizens’ Rights And Responsibilities. The Study Of Citizenship’s Theoretical, Political, And Practical Aspects, As Well As Its Obligations And Rights, Is Known As Civic Education. The Mind Has To Be Activated Once Again In A Manner That Demonstrates Our Knowledge Of The Advantages Of Freedom And Our Willingness To Share It, Promote It, And Even Create Organisations That Support Its Reawakening.
Coincidentally, I Finished A Great Book On The Scottish Enlightenment The Night Before I Read Mr. Dreyfuss’ Book; He Makes Several Allusions To The Ideas Of This Little Volume. Although It Is Clear That Our Political Views Do Not Coincide, I Was Not Offended By His Concern That We Have Lost The Ability To Discuss Opposing Viewpoints In A Respectful Manner. The Core Of The Problem Is Undeniably True: Civics Education Has Entirely Lost Its Enlightenment-era Component Of Being Integrated Throughout All Learning. He Has The Proper Intentions In Mind. The Only Clear Solution (Apart From Making It A Priority At Home, As I Did With My Children And Am Doing With My Grandkids) Is To Push For It To Once Again Become A Priority In The Schools, Beginning In The Elementary Schools And Continuing All The Way Through. His Motivation To Achieve This Is Commendable. I Find It Abhorrent That We Send Armies Of People To High Schools To Register Seniors To Vote And Pressure Them To Do Their “Civic Duty” When They Are Illiterate And Incapable Of Making Any Kind Of Reasoned Choice. But The Big, Unanswered Question Is: Where Are These Teachers Going To Come From After Two Or More Generations With Not Only A Complete Lack Of Proper Education In Either Civics, American History, Or Enlightenment Principles — And In Many Cases, A “Higher Education” Stressing Hatred And Disdain For Those Very Things?
