Purity is a difficult book to read, as it focuses on purity culture and society’s double standard. Despite being an atheist, the author understands the heart of what Livvy is struggling with, even while being non-religious. Cole Walker has been in love with me since the first day he walked into class, but I don’t know how to flirt. We share a kiss that makes the world stand still, and I begin to wonder if I’ve misread him. Innocent Livvy and Cole find love after an explosive kiss. The main disappointment and frustration with this book is that Livvy and Cole exhibited great communication skills, but never actually communicated about things that matter. Cole was toxic and possessive, and Livvy was too passive. The pacing was too fast and the book was only 200 pages long. The short chapters and writing make reading a breeze, but I’m worried the next book will be a repeat of the “innocent naive girl x playboy douche bag” trope. This was excellent, and the characters together were adorable.
Livvy is reluctant to toss her silver ring into the ocean, but her sister Vanessa encourages her to do so, as her parents would be devastated if they found out. This ring was a gift from her dad on her thirteenth birthday and means as much to her now as it did eight years ago.The narrator is tired of living in a box of purity culture and is ready to let it go. Mariana encourages her to toss the ring she’s been fantasizing about giving to Cole Walker, and Vanessa encourages her to be a good person and not save herself for marriage. The narrator takes a deep breath and lifts her fist, but the wave crests and crashes before streaming past her bare feet, sending a chill up her spine.Mari and Vanessa are shocked when Mari announces that she is going to lose her virginity by the end of the summer. Mari’s brows pull together, and Vanessa’s gaze falls to the sand. Mari explains that she is living an incredibly passive life, and that getting drunk and making out with random guys is not really living. Vanessa asks Mari why she is doing this, and Mari explains that none of this is going to stop Jesus from loving her if she loses her virginity.Mari asks why Vanessa is doing these things, and Vanessa explains that Cole is in love with her, but doesn’t want her sexually.
Livvy is thoughtful and sensitive, and has been different these past few weeks in a way I can’t quite pinpoint. I worry about her getting a boyfriend, but she is too steady and strong in her principles to abandon our friendship. My mom is walking down the pathway from the main house with a keg of Coors Light and Stone IPA. She tells me to keep everyone outside and if anyone needs to crash, they’re sleeping in the guesthouse with her. She also tells me to stay in my knitting room if anyone gets too drunk, and if there’s even the faintest scent of vomit in her knitting room, she’s starting her apartment hunt tomorrow. I can’t wait to hear what Livvy has to tell me.Cole is surprised by the news of his father’s divorce from his wife, but is not surprised at all. He has been an utter shit husband for as long as he can remember and plans to live in the guesthouse until he finds his own place. His mother, however, is having a hard time accepting the news and suggests that he find a divorce lawyer to help him cope with the situation. She suggests that Zac’s dad is a lawyer and he knows all the best lawyers in Santa Barbara, but Cole is hesitant to let her take care of the matter. The narrator is anxious about their daughter’s decision to ask for a divorce from their father. The narrator is determined to take over Walker Industries someday, as it is the least they can do for her. However, the narrator is hesitant to argue with her, as arguing with her will lead to a conversation they don’t want to have. The narrator also dreads having to work for their father, as divorces are complicated and it is never just one person’s fault.
Mari encourages me to be thankful for Cole’s hotness and not pine over him if he says no, and she has a plan to get me drunk and ready to make out. If Cole says no, I’ll be too dejected for anything other than going home and writing about it in my journal.Mari and Cole walk around the side of the house until they spot a group of people at the edge of the property, near Cole’s guesthouse. Mari looks for Cole, who is standing near the Koi pond with a red cup in his hand and is surrounded by a few girls she vaguely remembers from high school. Cole’s eyes are fixed on Mari, who is pretty and outgoing, just like him. Mari takes a deep breath and walks confidently in his direction, trying to make her strides large and confident. As soon as she gets close, he opens his arms wide and pulls her into a tight embrace.Cole is in a strange mood and hugs me so tightly that I can’t take a breath for a moment. He then turns to two girls and tells them that he punched Zac in the face for hugging Livvy and got suspended from the baseball team for it. He explains that he was just trying to push him away and that he didn’t mean to do it that hard. He then tells them that Zac wasn’t being that handsy.
The narrator is reminded of the heady moments they had with an angel years ago when they thought they could be together, but she is not for them, as she is a Christian and would only ever be with another Christian. The narrator, Livvy, is an atheist who is willing to be with an atheist, but the narrator is unable to put out that flicker of need for her, despite all their efforts. Livvy is trying to convince the narrator to do something that they are afraid of, and the narrator is too raw to say no. The narrator is torn between wanting to pull her to the ground, shove herself inside her, and never come out again. Ultimately, the narrator realizes that they cannot do this, and that Livvy is the best person to do it.Cole is struggling with how to tell his best friend no when she suggests they have sex. He is afraid of heights, so he wants to get over his fear by going on a rollercoaster with her. However, she is the perfect person to do it, as she has sex all the time and is comfortable having sex with people she doesn’t know. Cole is trying to explain that not everyone likes the same things, and that even if they tried to do it how they would like it, people can get lost in the moment. He is trying to show her he is worthy of her trust.
Skyler Mason’s books have horrible male leads and heroines who put up a front that they are independent, but in the end are treated like doormats and the hero is a jerk. The main drama is when the heroine goes back to being a doormat and gets back with the male lead. The author should either let the heroines be single by the end of the book or write a decent male lead that is not trash. The book was underwhelming due to two main aspects: the heroine’s self reflection and the romance, neither of which were good enough to make it worthwhile. This book follows Livvy’s exploration of sexuality and her best friend Cole, who is protective of her. It is a beautiful book about exploring a relationship and finding your perfect person.Book tok tricked me into reading it, but every book counts.Livvy breaks free of her purity contract and asks her best friend Cole to help her get through her list of firsts before the end of the summer, leading to them finally being together.
