   Lord John Grey and his brother Harold Grey arrive at their favorite club, The Society for Appreciation of the English Beefsteak, to meet their soon-to-be stepfather, Sir George Stanley. Afterward, Hal and John visit his office, where John sees a page from his father’s journal on the desk. Hal asks John if he knows solicitor Melchior Ffloukes, Private Harrison Otway, or Captain Michael Bates, explaining that the three are rumored to be involved in a “sodomite conspiracy” to undermine the government.

  John learns that a month after their father died, Hal publicly staked 20,000 pounds on his father not being a traitor. John and Percy meet at a coffeehouse and flirt before walking to Lady Jonas. Later, John speaks to Jamie and asks him if Gerald Grey was among the Jacobite conspirators known to Jamie. John returns to London and learns that Michael Bates attempted to murder Bernard Adams than escaped to Ireland. John is attacked while walking with Percy near Neal’s Yard and is treated by Rabbie MacNab and Nessie at their nearby brothel. To explain his injuries, John tells his mother he was run down by a mail coach, which backfires when Benedicta breaks off her engagement with Sir George. John, Hal, and Percy travel with their regiment to the Rhineland and John tells Hal that their father was murdered.

The Honorable Joseph stood across the dining room, deep in conversation with Lord Hanley and Mr. Pitt. Lord John turned the posy critically in his hand, watching the man from beneath lowered lashes. He wished he were not in the habit of such sur. Major Grey arrives at White’s and is greeted by Malcolm Stubbs, lieutenant of his own regiment, who greets him with surprise. Grey is unsure whether to go to the smoking room to wait for Quarry, or down the hall to the library, but decides to leave the whiggery-pokery up to Stubbs. Grey was introduced to Stubbs by Trevelyan, who introduced him to his godfather, who enrolled him for the Beefsteak at the age of seven. Grey recognized the embossed gold tag at its neck as San Isidro, a hundred guineas the cask.

Widow’s Walk

   A new posting in France, which would keep him away from England for two years or more, but he could return every few months without much difficulty, fulfilling a promise he had made to his Jacobite prisoner. Grey is also excited to see the exotic sights of India, but is aware that such a foreign posting would likely keep him away for two years. He has hopes in the power of time to heal the breach, and imagines Jamie Fraser striding over the high fells of the Lake District.

   Grey follows Stubbs through the shop’s narrow door, where he notices a sign reading F. SCANLON, APOTHECARY. The proprietor, Finbar Scanlon, is a dark, burly man hovering over his counter, arms outspread as though ready to snatch up any bit of merchandise. The apothecary sidles out from behind the counter to block the way, and Grey asks if Mrs. O’Connell is gone. Scanlon replies that she has gone to speak to the priest about the funeral. Stubbs and Grey arrive at the apothecary’s shop to inquire about Mrs. O’Connell’s absence, but the man behind the counter offers them a drink to cheer their wait. Grey accepts, though with some reluctance, seeing Scanlon’s long fingers selecting empty jars and tins to serve as drinking vessels.

   Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade is the second book in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series and takes place while Jamie is working as a groom in England as a condition of his parole. The plot involves Lord John’s attempt to discover what really occurred years earlier when his father was reported to have committed suicide due to the fact he was about to be exposed as a Jacobite traitor. Lord John has never believed his father guilty, but he and his mother and brother have all lived with the heavy burden of the family’s disgrace for years.

   The story of Lord John and his relationship with his new half-brother by marriage in Lord John and the Private Matter is a suspense plot line that focuses heavily on Lord John’s relationship with his gay half-brother. Gabaldon excels at bringing the period to life, and the plot does meander, but the mystery plot is not the reason to come to this party. Lord John is a great character who is more than capable of taking center stage and starring in his own series of novels, but he doesn’t find love at the young age he is here, so consider this fair warning that the traditional HEA is absent.
