I Still Find Myself Saying “Ha Ha” When I See Humbert’s Initials “H.h.” And Speculating As To Whether The Joke Is On Us. There Is A Lot More Behind The Novel’s Surface. A Complete Complex Living Organism Exists. You May Spend Days, Weeks, Months, Or Even A Lifetime Losing Yourself In Its Arms. As Long As Your Love Of Wordplay—both Words And Play—permits You. Once Again, On The Surface, There Seems To Be A Huge Conflict Between Morality And Aesthetics Inside The Pages. Whether Or Not Nabokov Intentionally Created The Conflict, He Created The Subject. In The Way We Read His Novel, We, The Readers, May Create Our Own Conflict. Nabokov Was Aware That The Topic Would Arouse Our Morals And Sense Of Righteousness, If Not Our Desires. The Novel’s Plot Weaves Morality And Aesthetics Together. They Embrace One Another In A Single, Extended Death Roll, Much Like Clare Quilty And Humbert Humbert. We Observe Their Interactions With Open Minds And Mouths, Yet Ultimately They Must Be Pulled Apart Or Divided. They Become One When They Are Together. They Are Each Other’s Double While They Are Apart.
There Is No Question That Having Sex With A Minor While An Adult Is Not Only Wrong, But Also Illegal. Unquestionably, It Is A Fact. Legally Speaking, The Adult’s Motivation Has No Bearing On The Evidence Of The Crime. The Minor’s Consent Is Not Relevant To The Crime’s Proof. Humbert Would Not Have Had A Legal Defence If He Had Been Accused Of Engaging In Sexual Relations With A Minor. It Wouldn’t Have Mattered If Lolita Had Actually Tried To Seduce Humbert. In Fact, The Evidence May Not Even Have Been Admissible, Except Maybe As A Component Of The Penalty Determination. In Other Words, Even If It Had To Do With Punishment, It Had Nothing To Do With Guilt. He Had No Moral Justification Either Since Morality Is A Social Construct That Depends On Collective Endorsement. The Determination By Society That An Act Is Immoral Does Not Really Depend On An Individual’s Own Beliefs. The Individual Has The Option To Either Comply Or Offend.
Over The Course Of Two Years, Humbert Offended Countless Times, Not Just Once. Even If Someone Wanted To Argue That This 12-year-old Seductress Walked Voluntarily Into The Trap, He Carefully Planned His Seduction, Set His Trap, And Caught His Prey. After Rescuing Lolita From The Trap, He Put Her In A Cage And Committed The Same Crime. She Had Several Opportunities To Escape The Cage (Which She Eventually Did), So One May Argue Again. However, Humbert Surrounded Lolita With A Complex System Of Self-doubt That Persuaded Her That If They Were Discovered, She Would Become A Ward Of The State.
From Humbert’s Perspective, “Lolita” Is Written. It Is A Formal, Written Document, Not Just A Memory In His Head. In The 56 Days Between His 1952 Arrest (For Which He Was Only Charged With The Murder Of Clare Quilty) And His Death In Custody Before His Trial Could Begin, He Sat Down And Wrote It. To Tell The Story, I Find The Written Document To Be A Fascinating Literary Device. The Document Transforms Into A Book Within A Book. Even Though It Is Obvious That Nabokov Wrote It, All He Really Does Is Sandwich It Between A Foreword And A (Much Later) Afterword. The Relationship Between Humbert And The Reader Is Interestingly Established Through This Technique. It Is Comparable To A Confession Or A Witness Statement In Humbert’s Eyes. What He Confesses To Is Clearly Enough To Convict Him Of The Murder Crime To This Extent. He Also Outlines Crimes That, For Some Reason, He Was Never Charged With In It, However. Humbert, However, Is Neither An Actor Portraying A Different Fictional Character Or A Different Version Of Himself While Wearing A Mask. I Think We Are Now Recognising Him For Who He Really Is. He Is As Sly, Cunning, And Refined As A Peacock And As Dexterous, Elaborate, And Attractive As A Fox. His Ornamentation, Or Decoration, Is An Integral Part Of Him, Of His Life, His Loins, His Sin, And His Soul. He Was Prepared To Lie And Cheat In Order To Get What He Wanted While Pursuing Lolita. If Only Because There Was No Benefit To Lying, I Don’t Think He Was Ready To Lie To Us. He Only Questions The Accuracy Of His Memory When He Sometimes Doubts The Truth Of His Own Account. He Didn’t Have To Tell Lies To Be Lenient, Nor Did He Have To Conceal Anything In Order To Do So. He Would Only Be Found Guilty Of Crimes For Which He Had Not Been Charged In Addition To The Charge Of Murder For Which He Had Been Accused By Confessing To Anything. Other Than Telling The Truth As He Saw It, There Was No Use In Confessing To Anything Else. His Disclosures Would Actually Make His Punishment Worse Since They Weren’t Going To Win Him Any Favours Or Lessen The Severity Of His Sentence. I Don’t Think Of Humbert As A “Unreliable Narrator” In This Sense. I Am Aware That Some People May Respond By Saying That Paedophiles Lie Often And Can’t Help It. That Could Very Well Be The Case, But I Believe It Is Our Horror At His Crime, Our Moral Judgement Influencing How We View Him As A Whole, And Influencing How We Respond (Aesthetically) To The Book And The Character. Maybe Naively, I’m Trying To See The Good In Him. In The End, I Think Humbert Wanted Us To Comprehend His Love And What He Had Discovered About It At The End Of His Story, Regardless Of Whether It Was Morally Wrong.

He Finds Physical Ageing To Be Unattractive Beyond That Age (As He Did With His First Wife And Lolita’s Mother). Okay, We All Have A Say In Who Our Love Objects Are. How Can We Explain Our Decisions? There Isn’t A Way To Account For Love. Still, A Fear Or Disgust Of Ageing And Mortality Lies At The Core Of This Aesthetic Approach To Love. There Is An Unrealistic Desire To Remain Young And Immortal Forever, As Well As A Lack Of Understanding And Acceptance Of The Cycle Of Life And Death. In The Book’s First Section, I Struggled To Comprehend Humbert’s Love, And This Is The Best I Could Do. I Won’t Say I Felt Sorry For Him, But I Believe I Understood Who He Was And What He Stood For. Even His Obsession Seemed Understandable To Me. How Many Of Us Trap And Oppress Our Love Interest In The Early Stages Of A Relationship To The Point That We Are Unable To See How Oppressive We Were Until The Union Has Been Consummated, Transformed Into Something More Mature, Or Come To An End? However, At The Conclusion Of The First Part (The Consummation) And The Beginning Of The Second Part (The Imprisonment), Things Began To Change. There Was No Sense Of A Satisfying Relationship Or Sexual Encounter (Although, To Be Fair, He Avoids Discussing The Specifics Of Their Sexual Activity Other From Physical Exertion). But I Had The Impression That When It Came To Consuming His Love, All He Cared About Was Sticking His Dick Into The Object Of His Affection. Okay, Many Sexual Relationships Can Be Simplified To This Basic Penetrative Act. Some Men Believe That Women Are Nothing More Than The Cup Into Which They Spill Their Maleness And Its Many Manifestations. Though It Was Transgressive, I Began To Get The Impression In The Second Part That Humbert’s Goal Was To Desecrate Or Ruin The Beauty That Had Drawn Him In The First. It Also Stood Out To Me In The Three Year Zone Of Enchantment That Humbert Would Only Look For The Next Beautiful Nymph To Stick His Dick Into. So It Became More And More Clear To Me That He Was A Serial Destroyer Of Beauty Rather Than An Actual Lover Or Admirer Of It. This Love Is Hotwired With Hatred Or Disgust. When The Time Comes To Remove The Flowers From Your Vase And Put Them In The Trash, You Often Don’t Hate Them. However, You Get The Impression That The Moment The Calendar Turned Over, Humbert Would Have Been Disgusted By His Former Love Objects, His Objet D’obsession. Obviously, More Traditional Relationships Show The Same Disgust Or Loss Of Interest. It Might Be The Cause Of The Man’s Mid-life Crisis When He Flees With The Younger Woman. It Might Explain Why We Find It Difficult To Accept Ageing, At Least In Our Partner. It Might Explain Why Some Men Still Think Of Themselves As The Unchangeable 20-year-old Who Deserves A Partner Who Is Young And Attractive, Regardless Of How Frail Or Old Or Fat Or Ugly They Have Grown To Be. Therefore, The Rest Of Us Can Learn Something About Our Own Love From Humbert’s Love.

Neither He Nor Nabokov Withheld The Information That Would Have Turned Me Against Him. Nevertheless, I Continued To Read Until Chapter 29, When Humbert And The Pregnant, Married, And 17-year-old Dolores Reconnected. Your Interpretation Of The Confessions In This Chapter Will Determine What You Think Of Humbert And His Love And Whether Or Not You Believe Him To Be Telling The Truth.
