The Protagonists In Jhumpa Lahiri’s Exquisite, Moving Novels Navigate Between The Inherited Indian Traditions And The Perplexing New World As They Seek For Love That Transcends Generational And Cultural Boundaries.
A Young Indian-american Couple Experiences The Heartache Of A Stillbirth In “A Temporary Matter,” Which Was Published In The New Yorker, While Their Boston Neighbourhood Struggles With Regular Blackouts.
An Translator Takes An American Family On A Tour Of The India Of Their Ancestors In The Title Tale, During Which The Interpreter Overhears An Unexpected Confession. Anita Desai Would Be Proud Of Lahiri’s Acute Cultural Knowledge And Mavis Gallant Would Admire Her Subtle Depth In Her Writing.
Nilanjana Sudeshna “Jhumpa” Lahiri Was Raised In South Kingstown, Rhode Island, After Being Born In London. She Was Raised In America By A Mother Who Insisted On Raising Her Kids As Indians, Thus She Became Aware Of Her Bengali Ancestry At A Young Age.
After Graduating From South Kingstown High School, Lahiri Went On To Barnard College Where She Earned Her B.a. In English Literature In 1989. She Later Earned A Ph.d. In Renaissance Studies, An M.a. In Comparative Literature, An M.a. In Creative Writing, And Many More Degrees From Boston University. She Accepted A Fellowship At The Fine Arts Work Center In Provincetown, Which She Held During The Next Two Years (1997–1998).
She Wed Journalist Alberto Vourvoulias-bush, Who Was Then The Deputy Editor Of Time Latin America, In 2001. Currently, Lahiri, Her Husband, And Their Two Kids Reside In Brooklyn. Since 2005, She Has Served As The Pen American Center’s Vice President.
At Boston University And The Rhode Island School Of Design, Lahiri Taught Creative Writing. Her Short Stories Often Focus On The Lives Of Indian Americans, Especially Bengalis.
Among Others, She Won The Following Accolades:
1999: Interpreter Of Maladies Won The Pen/hemingway Award For Best Fiction Debut Of The Year;
2000: Interpreter Of Maladies Won The New Yorker’s Best Debut Of The Year Award;
2000: Interpreter Of Maladies, Her First Novel, Won The Pulitzer Prize For Fiction.
How About This For A Blurb: When This Collection Of Short Stories Was Published In 1999 By A Female Author, She Was 32 Years Old And Had Already Won The Pulitzer Prize, The Pen/hemingway Award, And The New Yorker’s Debut Book Of The Year.
These Stories, Like The Other Collection Of Shorts By The Author That I Have Reviewed (Unaccustomed Earth, 2008), Are About Bengali Immigrants To The United States From The Bengal Region Of India, Namely The Area Around Kolkata (Formerly Calcutta). There Are Over 250 Million Bengalis In The Subcontinent, With About Two Thirds Living In The Mostly Muslim Country Of Bangladesh And The Remaining Third In West Bengal, An Indian State.
With The Exception Of Two Stories, However, These People Are Not From Urban Slums; Instead, They Are Upper-class People With Doctorates And Master’s Degrees Who Grew Up Speaking English In India And Immigrated To The United States To Work As Physicians, Professors, And Engineers In High-tech Beltway Bandit Firms In The Boston Area. They Reside In Upscale Neighbourhoods And Boston Townhouses. Furthermore, It’s Misleading To Refer To These Stories As Being About “Immigrants” Since The Majority Of The People In Them Had Already Become Fully Integrated Members Of The Global Upper Class Before They Left For The United States.
Here Is An Example Of One Of The Nine Stories:
In The Title Story, A Man Who Interprets For A Doctor In Native Indian Languages Also Serves As A Tour Guide For Foreign Tourists Visiting India. This Is What He Tells A Visiting Bengali Family From The United States. The Tour Guide Is Shocked When The Wife Spills Her Secrets To The Husband Since She Is Desperate For Someone To Confide In.
In The Book “Mrs. Sen’s,” An Eleven-year-old Boy Discovers The Depth Of The Loneliness Experienced By A Bengali Woman Living In Boston Who Is Very Attached To Her Large Extended Family In India.
One Of Two Tales Called “A Real Durwan” Is Set In Ancient India, Not America. Bent With Age And Living In Poverty, The Elderly Woman Sweeps The Stairwell Of An Apartment Block. She Slumbers Under The Mailboxes On A Pile Of Rags. The Tenants Decide They Want A Real Concierge While Building Improvements Are Made And Throw The Temporary One Out Into The Street.
In The Movie “Sexy,” A Young Woman Hears Her Coworker Express Horror At The Infidelity Of Her Cousin’s Husband, Who Abandoned His Wife In Favour Of A Younger, Unmarried Woman, Every Day. Despite Being Best Friends At Work, The Woman Is Unable To Disclose To Her That She Is Having An Affair With A Married Bengali Guy.
In ‘this Blessed House’, A Young Bengali Couple Has Just Moved Into A New House And Keeps Discovering Jesus Posters Under Wardrobe Doors, Crosses, Mary Statues In The Bushes And Nativity Scenes In Nooks And Corners. The Wife Gathers Them And Places Them On The Mantle Over Her Husband’s Objections. “‘we’re Not Christian,’ Sanjeev Said. He Had Just Started To See The Need To Twinkle By Stating The Obvious. Engineer Sanjeev Is A Reclusive Person. And It’s Possible That Despite Her Lacklustre Housekeeping Abilities, Party Animal Twinkle Will Be The Perfect Complement To Sanjeev If He Has The Sense To Retain Her.
The Author’s Collection, Unaccustomed Earth, Has Some Excellent Stories, But Maladies Is Far Better. No Surprise That It Won So Many Awards.
When Someone Asks You For A Synopsis, Excerpt, Or Impression Of A Book, All You Can Do Is Smile While Being Enveloped In Some Subtle Magic That Only You Are Aware Of, And You Begin To Kind Of Forget What The Book Was Really About. This Occurred When The Collection Of Short Stories “Interpreter Of Maladies” About Indian Americans In India Or The United States Was Published. Their Experiences Range From Tourism In The Old World To The Natural Assimilation Into A New One, And Their Ages Range From Children To Married People To 103-year-olds.
First Story Gives Me The Chills Simply Considering It, I Required My Students To Read It As A Model For The Ideal Short Story. & The Last One Perfectly Summarizes The Author’s Main Thesis. Everything Is A Masterpiece. An Honor To Read.
The Tales In The Book Aren’t Connected, Yet They All Explore The Immigrant Experience And How It Might Transform Or Distance Individuals From Their Background. The Tension In The Collection’s Six Pieces About First- Or Second-generation Indian Immigrants To America Is Often Fueled By Their Cultural Differences Or By Their Struggles To Fit In. Two Of The Three Tales Are About Women Who Live In Poverty And Their Roles In The Community And Are All Situated In India.
The Premiere Tale, “A Temporary Matter,” Deviates The Most From The Topics Of The Other Pieces. Despite Being Happily Established In America, Shoba And Shukumar Are Dealing With A Miscarriage That Has Strained Their Marriage. The Two Seize The Chance To Confide In Each Other In The Dark When They Find That Their House Would Be Without Electricity For An Hour Each Night. Intimate Admissions From Shukumar Each Night Have Led Him To Believe That He And His Wife Are On The Verge Of Reconciliation; But, On The Penultimate Night Of Their Game, Shoba Confesses That She Has Moved Into A New Apartment. The Two Sob Together As Shukumar Makes One More Admission: He Held Their Child’s Corpse Before He Was Buried.
A Little Indian Girl Is Introduced To Mr. Pirzada In “When Mr. Pirzada Comes To Dine,” A Story About A Family Friend Whose Homeland Of Dacca Had Been Invaded During The Start Of The Bangladesh War For Independence. He Spends The Nights With The Family When They Watch The News In Dacca While His Wife And Girls Are Still There. Due Of Their Varied Ethnicities, The Little Girl Finds It Difficult To Distinguish Between Her Family And Mr. Pirzada. The Child And Mr. Pirzada Develop A Strong Relationship, And When He Departs To Locate His Family, She Discovers What It’s Like To Miss Someone.
The Narrative Of “Interpreter Of Maladies” Centres On Mr. Kapasi, A Tour Guide Who Leads The Americanized Indian Immigrants From The Das Family On A Tour Of An East Indian Temple. Mr. Das Finds The Family Odd And Unruly, But He Warms To Mrs. Das When She Expresses Interest In His Other Profession As A Doctor’s Office Translator. When They Get There, Mrs. Das Remains In The Vehicle With Him And Admits That One Of Her Children Is Not Her Husband’s. He Attempts To Extend The Trip By Offering To Drive Them To Another Location. When The Youngster Is Assaulted By Monkeys, Mr. Kapasi Protects Him Despite The Fact That His Memory Of Her Is Fading And The Illusion Of This Family Has Been Destroyed.
The Story “A Real Durwan” Is About An Elderly Lady Who Lives In The Stairway Of A Dilapidated Building. Since She Keeps Watch Over The Building, The Residents Put Up With Her Tales Of Her Fall From Grace, But When One Of Them Installs A Wash Basin In The Stairway, Her Life Is Upended As Other Tenants Jealously Strive To Make Improvements Of Their Own. She Begins To Spend The Nights On The Roof And The Days Roaming The Streets. She Loses Her Life Savings And The Wash Basin Is Stolen When She Is Away From The Building. The Tenants, Who No Longer Feel Sorry For Her, Kick Her Out.
In The Movie “Sexy,” A Young Lady Called Miranda Starts A Relationship With An Indian Guy Named Dev While Her Indian Colleague’s Cousin Is Going Through A Divorce As A Result Of Her Husband’s Adultery. When Dev’s Wife Comes Home, Miranda, Who Is Caught Up In The Whirlwind Relationship, Purchases A Stunning Cocktail Dress, But Their Affair Quickly Turns Into A Weekly Ritual Without Any Intrigue. Her Experience With The Youngster Convinces Her That She Won’t Be Able To Obtain What She Wants With Dev, So She Ends The Relationship. She Offers To Babysit The Cousin’s Son While Her Colleague Shows Her About The City.
The Narrative Of “Mrs. Sen’s” Centres On A Foreigner’s Experiences Looking After A Little Child Named Eliot After School. As Eliot And Mrs. Sen Get Close, Eliot Observes Mrs. Sen’s Difficulties Learning To Drive And Her Feelings Of Isolation As An Immigrant Without A Support System. Mrs. Sen Debates Driving With Her Husband Before Deciding To Study The Bus Timetable Instead. However, When She Brings Home Fresh Fish—her Favourite Indulgence—on The Bus, She Feels Humiliated. The Next Time She Wants Fish, She Decides To Drive, But She Gets Into A Car Accident, Ending Her Relationship With Eliot.
In “This Blessed House,” Sanjeev And Twinkle, A Newlywed Immigrant Couple, Tell The Story Of How They Constantly Discovering Christian Artefacts In Their New House. Sanjeev Finds The Artefacts Repulsive, And Twinkle Wants To Showcase Them, So He Questions If He Truly Loves His New Wife. Before A Housewarming Celebration, He Pressures Her To Get Rid Of Them, But She Refuses. The Attendees At The Party Are Attracted By Her And Decide To Embark On A Treasure Search For Additional Objects. When They All Go To The Attic, Sanjeev Contemplates Locking Them All Up There Until Twinkle Shows Up With A Huge Bust Of Jesus, Which Convinces Him That She Is Who She Is.
