I’m Delighted To Join You In What Will Be Remembered As The Biggest Demonstration In Support Of Freedom In The History Of Our Country.
A Great American, Under Whose Symbolic Shadow We Stand Now, Signed The Emancipation Proclamation Five Score Years Ago. Millions Of Black Slaves Who Had Been Scorched By Raging Injustice Saw This Historic Decree As A Great Beacon Light Of Hope. A Happy Daybreak Finally Arrived To End The Long Night Of Their Captivity. But Even Now, The Black Man Is Still Not Free. The Manacles Of Segregation And The Chains Of Discrimination Still Tragically Impair The Life Of The Negro One Hundred Years Later. The Negro Lives On A Lonely Island Of Poverty In The Middle Of A Vast Ocean Of Material Prosperity One Hundred Years Later. One Hundred Years Later, The Black Man Continues To Be Marginalised In American Society And Is Forced To Live As An Exile In His Own Country. We’ve Thus Come Here Today To Dramatise A Deplorable Situation.
We Came To The Nation’s Capital To Essentially Cash A Check. The Magnificent Words Of The Constitution And The Declaration Of Independence Were Written By The Architects Of Our Republic, And They Signed A Promissory Note To Which Every American Was To Fall Heir. This Note Promised That The “Unalienable Rights” To “Life, Liberty, And The Pursuit Of Happiness” Would Be Guaranteed To All Men, Including Black And White Men. When It Comes To Her Citizens Of Colour, It Is Clear That America Has Defaulted On Her Promissory Note. Instead Of Fulfilling This Sacrosanct Obligation, America Sent The Black Population A Bad Check That Was Returned Marked “Insufficient Funds.” However, We Don’t Think The Bank Of Justice Is Bankrupt. We Refuse To Accept That The Great Vaults Of Opportunity In This Country Lack Sufficient Funds. We’ve Come To Cash This Check Because It Will Provide Us With The Riches Of Freedom And The Security Of Justice Upon Demand.
We Are Also Here To Remind America Of The Urgent Need For Action Right Now. This Is Not The Time To Indulge In The Luxury Of Taking A Break Or To Use Gradualism As A Sedative. The Time Has Come To Fulfil Democracy’s Promises. It’s Time To Leave The Gloomy And Desolate Valley Of Segregation Behind And Embark On The Sunny Road Of Racial Justice. It Is Time To Get Our Country Out Of The Racial Injustice Quagmire And Onto The Firm Foundation Of Brotherhood. The Time Has Come To Establish Justice For All Of God’s Children.
To Ignore The Urgency Of The Situation Would Be Fatal For The Country. Until There Is A Revivifying Autumn Of Freedom And Equality, This Scorching Summer Of The Legitimate Discontent Of The Black Population Will Continue. The Year 1963 Marks A New Beginning, Not An End. And Those Who Believe That The Black Man Needed To Let Off Steam And Is Now Content Will Be Rudely Awakened If The Country Resumes Its Normal Course. And Until The Negro Is Granted His Citizenship Rights, There Won’t Be Any Peace Or Quiet In America. Until The Bright Day Of Justice Emerges, The Whirlwinds Of Revolt Will Continue To Shake The Foundations Of Our Country.
However, I Have A Message For My People Who Are Standing At The Warm Entrance To The Palace Of Justice: In Order To Take Our Rightful Place, We Must Not Be Held Accountable For Wrongdoing. Let’s Not Drink From The Cup Of Hatred And Bitterness In An Attempt To Quench Our Thirst For Freedom. We Must Always Fight With The Highest Standards Of Decency And Discipline. We Cannot Permit Physical Violence To Emerge From Our Creative Protest. We Must Continually Reach The Lofty Heights Of Opposing Physical Force With Soul Force.
The Amazing New Militancy That Has Engulfed The Black Community Must Not Cause Us To Distrust All White People Because Many Of Our White Brothers Have Realised That Their Destiny Is Linked To Our Destiny, As Seen By Their Presence Here Today. And They’ve Come To See How Closely Tied Their Freedom Is To Our Freedom.
We Can’t Go Alone.
We Must Promise To Always March Forward As We Move Forward. There Is No Going Back.
Some People Are Inquiring Among Civil Rights Adherents, “When Will You Be Satisfied?” As Long As Black People Are Subjected To The Unspeakable Horrors Of Police Brutality, We Will Never Be Satisfied. We Will Never Be Content As Long As Our Bodies, Worn Out From Travel, Are Unable To Find Lodging In The Highway Motels And City Hotels. As Long As The Basic Mobility Of The Black Population Is From A Smaller Ghetto To A Larger One, We Cannot Be Satisfied. As Long As Signs That Read “For Whites Only” Deprive Our Children Of Their Self-hood And Dignity, We Will Never Be Satisfied. As Long As A Black Person In Mississippi Is Unable To Cast A Ballot And A Black Person In New York Feels He Has Nothing To Vote For, We Will Not Be Satisfied. Until “Justice Rolls Down Like Waters, And Righteousness Like A Mighty Stream,” We Are Not Satisfied, And We Will Not Be. ¹
I Am Aware That Some Of You Have Faced Significant Hardships To Get Here. Some Of You Are New Arrivals From Cramped Jail Cells. And Some Of You Have Come From Places Where You Were Battered By The Winds Of Police Brutality And Staggered By The Storms Of Persecution In Your Quest For Freedom. You Are Experienced In Creative Suffering. Maintain Your Belief That Undeserved Suffering Is Redemptive. Return To Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, And The Slums And Ghettos Of Our Northern Cities, Certain That Something Can And Will Be Done To Change The Situation. I Say To You Today, My Friends, Let’s Not Wallowing In The Valley Of Despair.
Therefore, Even If We Must Deal With Today’s And Tomorrow’s Challenges, I Still Have A Dream. This Is A Deeply Ingrained American Dream.
I Dream That One Day Our Country Will Stand Up And Really Embody The Words Of Its Founding Anthem, “We Hold These Truths To Be Self-evident, That All Men Are Created Equal.” In My Dream, The Sons Of Former Slaves And The Sons Of Former Slave Owners Would One Day Be Able To Eat Together At A Table Of Brotherhood On Georgia’s Red Hills.
I Have A Dream That Mississippi, A State That Is Now Scorching With Injustice And Oppression, Would One Day Be Transformed Into An Oasis Of Liberty And Justice.
I Have A Dream That One Day, My Four Little Children Will Live In A Country Where People Evaluate Others Based On Who They Are As People, Not On The Colour Of Their Skin.
Today, I Have A Dream! I Have A Dream That Little Black Boys And Girls Will One Day Be Able To Join Hands With Little White Boys And Girls As Sisters And Brothers In Alabama, Despite The State’s Vicious Racism And Governor’s Lips Dripping With The Words “Interposition” And “Nullification.”
Today, I Have A Dream! I Believe That One Day All Valleys Will Be Exalted, All Hills And Mountains Will Be Lowered, All Crooked Places Will Be Straightened Out, And The Lord’s Glory Will Be Shown For All Flesh To See At Once. This Is Our Hope, And I’m Returning To The South With This Faith.
With This Faith, We Will Be Able To Carve A Stone Of Hope Out Of The Mountain Of Despair. We Will Be Able To Turn The Jangling Divisions Of Our Country Into A Lovely Symphony Of Brotherhood With The Help Of This Faith. We Will Be Able To Work Together, Pray Together, Struggle Together, Go To Jail Together, And Stand Up For Freedom Together Because We Have This Faith That One Day We Will Be Free.
And This Will Be The Day When All Of God’s Children May Sing With New Meaning, “My Country’s Of Thee, Sweet Land Of Liberty, Of Thee I Sing.” Let Freedom Ring From Every Mountainside In The Land Where My Fathers Died And The Land Of The Pilgrim’s Pride!
And This Must Come To Pass If America Is To Be A Great Nation. So Let Freedom Ring From New Hampshire’s Magnificent Hilltops. From The Mighty Mountains Of New York, Let Freedom Ring. Let Freedom Sing From Pennsylvania’s Heightening Alleghenies. Let Freedom Ring From Colorado’s Snow-capped Rockies. Let Freedom Ring From California’s Curvy Slopes. But Not Just That: From Georgia’s Stone Mountain, Let Freedom Ring. From Tennessee’s Lookout Mountain, Let Freedom Ring. Let Mississippi’s Hills And Molehills Echo With The Sound Of Freedom. Let Freedom Ring From Every Mountainside.
We Will Be Able To Accelerate The Day When All Of God’s Children, Black Men And White Men, Jews And Gentiles, Protestants And Catholics, Will Be Able To Join Hands And Sing In The Words Of The Old Negro Spiritual When This Occurs, When We Allow Freedom To Ring, When We Let It Ring From Every Village And Every Hamlet, From Every State And Every City.
