How To Kill Your Family Was Number 1 In The Sunday Times Paperback Chart On 26/04/2022
Bella Mackie’s Book ‘how To Kill Your Family’ Was A Sunday Times Bestseller W/c 30-01-2023.
The Perfect How-to Manual Is How To Kill Your Family. After Finishing This Book, I Managed To Murder My Family Within A Week. And Escaped With It.
Not Exactly. Although Bella Mackie’s Debut In Fiction Touched On A Complicated Emotional Streak I Wasn’t Aware I Had, I Haven’t Been Moved To Bury My Own Kin. The Reader’s Sense Of Morality And Understanding Of What It Means To Be A Murderer Are Put To The Test In This Darkly Humorous And Sometimes Unsettling First Book.
I Read How To Kill Your Family While At Home On Vacation, And Considering How Nervously Curious My Own Parents Were As They Skimmed The Book’s Title, I Can See Why Mackie’s Parents Needed To Be Addressed As “I Promise Never To Kill Either Of You.”
Bella Mackie, A Journalist Who Has Written For Publications Including Vogue, The Guardian, Vice, And Gq, To Name A Few, Is The Daughter Of Former Guardian Editor And Principal Of Lady Margaret Hall, Alan Rusbridger. Her First Book, Jog On: How Running Saved My Life, A Sunday Times Bestseller, Bravely Documented Her Struggle With Anxiety And Her Discovery That Exercise May Help Her Overcome The Severe Mental And Psychological Issues She Had At The End Of Her Twenties.
The Reader Is Also Taken On A Kind Of Psychological Journey In How To Kill Your Family. Grace Bernard, The Protagonist Of The Book, Is 28 Years Old. She Embarks On A Mission To Kill Every Member Of Her Family In Order To Get Revenge On Her Father, A Millionaire Businessman And Stereotypical Playboy Who Abandoned Her And Her Mother When They Were Infants.
Grace And I Meet In Prison. But As Is Evident Throughout The Whole Book, She Is There For Reasons That Turn Out To Be Far More Complicated Than Those That Would Be Involved In A Simple Murder-arrest-incarceration Plot.
Flashes Of Humour And Grace’s Hilarious But True Observations About The Mundanity And Bizarreness Of Life Are Interspersed Among The Chaos Of The Calculated Revenge Plot. While I Never Thought Grace’s Victims Deserved Their Ultimate Fates, There Are Some Unexpectedly Uplifting Moments In The Story, And Grace’s Certainty And Confidence Almost Managed To Persuade Me Of The Need Of Her Actions.
Grace Is An Intriguing Character Whose Courage, Drive, And Unrepentant Cruelty Can Leave The Reader In Awe. I Don’t Want To Turn Into A Psychopath Like Grace, But There Are Certain Aspects Of Her Complex Yet Strong Character That I’d Want To Emulate In My Own Life. Despite Being Focused On The Exact Wrong Areas, Her Ambition And Determination Are Inspiring. She Embodies Everything That Women Are Advised Not To Be. She Defies The Stereotype Of A Subdued Woman Since She Is Goal-oriented, Selfish, And Acts In A Manner That Is Diametrically Opposed To It. No One Would Look To Grace As A Role Model, But Writing About Her Must Have Been Very Cathartic Because Of Her Sense Of Freedom From The Many Expectations That Are Placed On Almost Every Human Being.
She Makes Very Precise Plans, Which She Then Carries Out With Ease And Without Any Regrets. I Didn’t Realise How Heinous Her Actions Were Until I Stopped And Thought About Them. Her Meticulous Planning And Moral Justification Helped To Mask The Violence And Immorality Of Her Actions While I Was Absorbed In Her World.
“After All, Almost Nobody Else In The World Can Possibly Understand How Someone, By The Tender Age Of 28, Can Have Calmly Killed Six Members Of Her Family,” Grace Writes To The Reader In A Letter From Prison. She Then Happily Continued The Rest Of Her Life, Never Looking Back. Perhaps The Assertion In The Prologue Is Accurate, But After Spending Eighteen Chapters Inside Grace’s Mind, I Was Very Certain Of How She Accomplished It.
Since I Now Feel Like I Know Grace Intimately As A Character, I Can Comprehend How She Undertook And Carried Out Such A Task. I Never Fully Understood Grace’s Motivations For Adding “Eliminate My Entire Family” To Her To-do List, Nor Did I Fully Understand The Impact Her Father’s Abandonment Had On Her Or Her Mother. I Was Cheering For Grace, An Anti-heroine, In Spite Of Everything. Because Of The Strength Of Mackie’s Writing, I Was Drawn So Deeply Into The Protagonist’s Mind That I Was Able To See Her Thoughts As Well As Start To Understand Her, Almost Without A Doubt.
The Novel Comes To A Disappointing Conclusion With A Twist That I Thought Lacked Originality. I Was Upset By The Novel’s Ending For A Variety Of Other Reasons, However. I Want Grace’s Success. I Wanted Her To Succeed In All She Set Out To Do. Maybe It’s Just The Planner In Me, But I Wanted Her To Cross Everything Off Her To-do List.
No Novel Is Ever Perfect, Especially For A Hypercritical English Student Like Me, But In This Case Let Me Concentrate On Everything That Made This Novel Enjoyable. In Order To Validate Your Suspicions That The Human Mind Is Strangely Complex Or, Failing That, To Get Some Inspiration For How You Can Approach Your Own Checklist, I Implore You To Explore The Mind Of This Perplexing And Humorous Character As She Sets Out On Her Quest To Eliminate Her Family.
Grace Bernard Has Always Known That Her Father Left Her Mother And Her To Make A Meagre Life On Their Own In London. However, It Takes Her Until She Is A Teenager Before She Fully Comprehends The Extent Of His Negligence And How Callously His Affluent Family Has Abandoned Her To The Trash Bin. When She Is Thirteen Years Old, Her Mother Passes Away From Cancer, And She Starts To Devise A Plot To Exact Revenge And Get The Fortune She Is Due.
She Will Need To Eliminate Seven Members Of The Larger Artemis Family In Order To Achieve Her Objective, Starting With The Grandparents Who Were Likely The Cruellest Of All Of Them. Grace, Who Is Nothing If Not Practical, Determines That The Best Method To Murder Her Family And Escape Detection Is To Have A Series Of Mishaps Seem To Be The Cause Of Their Deaths:
I Want These Murders To Happen—done Correctly, Yeah, But I’m Not A Fervent Supporter Of Homicide, Looking For The Most Intriguing And Horrifying Methods To Kill. A Decent Murder Requires A Certain Level Of Art. I’ll Admit That I’m Amazed By The Extent Some People Will Go To, But I Don’t Want To Be Sucked Into Ever-more Extreme Schemes That May Lead To Me Dangling Down A Zip Line Across The Heart Of London And Beheading Someone For Show.
Grace Reflects On Her Life So Far As She Analyses, Pursues, And Kills Her Victims—some Undoubtedly More Deserving Than Others—while Making Sarcastic, Free-form Comments On All The Big And Little Problems Facing People Her Age. She Starts Talking, But It Soon Becomes Evident Why: She Is Incarcerated At Limehouse And Uses Writing As Her Primary Form Of Escape From Her Excessively Nosy Cellmate. Ironically, She Was Found Guilty Of A Murder For Which She Is Utterly Innocent, Which Seriously Interferes With Her Genuine Murderous Intentions. Will She Be Able To Get Her Freedom Back So She May Carry Out The Rest Of Her Deadly Campaign? Or Will She Experience Still More Difficulties That Permanently Thwart Her Goals?
This Is A Brutally Honest Portrait Of A Young Lady Who Harbours A Lot Of Fury And Directs It—at Times Rightfully, Other Times Less So—at Everything That Irritates Her. No One Is Immune From Her Biting Views About Everyone From The Entitlement Of The Affluent To The Haughtiness Of The Middle Class To The Dirt Of The Poor, Not Even The Comparatively Wealthy Lady Who Takes Her In As A Teenager And Tries To Inculcate Feminist Values In Her New Ward:
Did She Believe I Was Ignorant Of How The World Handled Women? Long Before I Had The Vocabulary To Explain How Women Are Marginalised, Ignored, And Denigrated, I Was Aware Of How The System Is Biassed Against Them. Day By Day, I Saw It Erode My Mother. She Was Raised By Strict Parents Who Had Strong Expectations For How Females Should Act And Who Rejected Her When She Chose To Live Her Life In A Certain Manner. She Was Also Praised For Her Beauty Until One Day She Wasn’t, And She Was Also Used By A Guy For Pleasure Until He Became Bored. Putting Up A Lot Of Effort In A Slew Of Low-paying Jobs Where She Never Felt Appreciated. Raising A Kid By Oneself Without It Having Any Significance.
Even When She Misbehaves To Achieve Her Objectives, Grace Is Often A Likeable Protagonist. Even Though She May Be Simple To Despise, It’s Hard To Read The Whole Book And Not Root For Her To Succeed In Her Goals, If Only Because We’ve Seen Her Psychology At Its Most Frightful And Awful. Because Of This, The Major Revelation At The Conclusion Seemed Strangely Inconsistent With The Book’s Overall, Apparently Feminist Goals. Bella Mackie May Have Intended For Her Readers To Feel Enraged By The Way Class And Patriarchy Continuously Benefit From The Efforts Of Tenacious Young Women To Improve Their Own Lives. Even If It May Be True To Reality, It Seems Like A Strange Place For Grace’s Story To End Since, As Readers At That Time Will Fully Know, Grace Still Has A Lot More Justifiable Murder Remaining To Explore.
