Her Soul to Take is the first book in the Souls trilogy by Harley Laroux, focusing on the relationship between college student Rae and demon Leon. Rae is a believer in the supernatural but struggles to accept her hometown’s ancient monsters and a being calling for her death. Leon wants her body and soul, but Rae is reluctant to give it. As they fight their feelings, Rae faces danger from the demon, its monsters, and the cult that worships it. The book is set in a creepy setting and features an intriguing plot with a sleeping god and a small town cult following. The characters are great, but the chemistry between Rae and Leon is a bit predictable. The sex is great, but the spitting scene makes me cringe. The book is not recommended for everyone, as it is on the darker side, dealing with a small town cult, gods, monsters, and demons. Harley LaRoux’s Souls Trilogy is a steamy paranormal romance with a dark romance twist. The book, which was recommended by Lauren, is a quick read and was on KU. The protagonist, Rae, is strong and endearing, with a strong sense of empowerment. Leon, a demon, is a great character, contrasting with the evil humans. The banter between Leon and Rae is great, and the book has a dark tone, so be aware of trigger warnings.
The writing is good, and the plot is captivating, with the protagonist on the edge of their seats. The creative juxtaposition between good and evil in the book emphasizes that what you think is true is not always true. Overall, this steamy and well-written paranormal romance is recommended for those who enjoy paranormal romances and are looking for something different and well-written.
The demon, Kenny-boy, is adamant about the blood spilled in its name and the awakening of the old God. He is buried alive in a room with his cronies, and Kent, a non-magical man, comes into the room with his cronies. Kent asks if the demon heard him and he grunts. Kent tells him to save his strength for the work ahead, stating that he would like to rip out his tongue if he wants to rip it out again. The two adult spawns, Victoria and Jeremiah, accompany Kent, and they tell him to go to Westchurch Cemetery at midnight to find Marcus Kynes’ grave and bring his body to White Pine. The demon is intrigued by the idea of growing a new tongue, which he finds fascinating. The world changes slightly, moving closer to the boundary between Heaven and Hell. Midnight always makes him feel good, as does finally stretching his legs and leaving the room. The author returns to a place they haven’t visited since childhood, feeling a sense of magic and a different world from their childhood. The real world is boring and involves office jobs, uncomfortable shoes, and retiring to Spain. The author decides to stay and finish their last year at university, as it is responsible and adult. The journey takes them through a world of wet grays and dark greens, eventually reaching the town of Abelaum. The author’s best friend, Inaya, owns Golden Hour Books, a bookstore that has made her dream a reality.
She is the brightest ray of sunshine she’s seen since San Francisco and feels warmer just being in her presence. The author feels guilty for rushing to meet her, but she assures her that she doesn’t have to do anything. The author decides to take the stacks she’s cataloged back to the back of her car, but she doesn’t have to. The author’s earliest memories were in an old cabin, which had been their vacation home since they moved to Southern California when they were seven. The cabin held a rich, softer, richer feeling than their teen memories. The forest was their fairy kingdom, and the stairway leading up to the master bedroom was the grand path they would lead their imaginary friends along. The corner office-turned-bedroom held wild memories of its own, and the author had seen their first ghost, “The Nighttime Cowboy,” who appeared through the wall, walk past the foot of the bed, pause, and disappear beside the window. This event started the author’s life’s obsession.
The author had to reassemble their life from the stacks of cardboard boxes, and the gray sky had darkened. They had to search for an apartment soon, but the idea felt daunting. They organized their books, placed their collection of potted succulents, and left their laptop and recording equipment scattered across the desk.
As night fell, the cloud cover made it pitch black outside, leaving only the rain on the glass, soft wind, and crickets chirping. The window panes became one-way mirrors, and the author felt a chill in the dark. The cabin seemed inconsequential in the night, as if its bare wooden walls and large windows could not hold back the darkness.
The protagonist, Kent, is a university campus guard who is tasked with keeping the Eld, ancient beasts of the forest, away from the students. Kent’s sacrifice awakened the Eld, who were only sustained by blood, magic, and pain. They were restless and would soon creep from the forest to hunt. The protagonist is responsible for keeping the Eld away from the students and town, and is willing to kill any Eld they find. Humans are the most pitifully willing prey, and offering an easy path to perversion and temptation makes them easy prey. A feast of curious college students is put before the protagonist, and they are all wary of him. However, a young woman, aferrating with energy and smelling of sage and mint, sneaks up the steps to Calgary Hall’s closed doors. The protagonist is concerned that if they give in too quickly to the need to hunt, pursue, and tempt, their human disguise would slip, and they would be running, screaming.
The protagonist is skeptical of her, as her wide-eyed, energetic companion is a reminder of the dangers of human deception. The protagonist is awakened by a primal guardian, who is a bitchy and desperate individual. She is unsure if she should stay back, but she is determined to find a way to escape. The protagonist is intrigued by the tape that warns her not to stay back for 20 feet. The protagonist’s curiosity and fear make her want to nudge the protagonist, but she is too distracted to do so. The protagonist’s curiosity leads her to explore dark lusts and sins, and she decides to leave if she is not willing.
Her Soul to Take is a dark romance novel by Hannah Whitten, featuring Rae, a demon who is stalking her family. The story is sexy and terrifying, with an almost Lovecraftian mythology that I adore. The book is not for the faint of heart, but I highly recommend it for dark romance readers who also like some horror in their books. The plot is unique, with creepy horror aspects paired with the erotica and romance.
The harder kinks work incredibly well with the plot and characters. The erotica is explosive, making Her Soul to Take an explosive read. Overall, Her Soul to Take is a must-read for anyone who enjoys dark romance and horror. The author enjoyed reading Demon Romances, particularly the well-written characters of Leon and Rae. The realistic interactions between the main characters and the less-powerful main hero, Leon, made the book enjoyable. The horror and romance aspects were well-executed, and the author eagerly anticipates its release. Overall, the book is an excellent read, bringing back the feel of reading and showcasing the potential of supernatural characters.
