Get The Information You Need To Travel Dc’s World-class Metrorail System, Including A Metro Map, Operating Schedules, Ride Costs, And More.
One Of The Busiest Public Transit Networks In The Nation Is The Metro In Washington, Dc. Its Extensive System Of Above-ground Rails And Tunnels Connects The Suburbs Of Virginia And Maryland With All Four Washington Quadrants.
Local Commuters Make Extensive Use Of The System, And It Is Now More Than Ever A Well-liked, Practical, And Economical Method For Visitors To Dc To Get Across The Area. Riders May Now Connect To The Dulles International Airport And Tour Loudoun County Thanks To Metro’s Newly Built Silver Line Extension. For Additional Details On The Extension, Go To The Metro Website.
Six Color-coded Lines Make Up The Metro: Red, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Green, And Silver. Transfer Stations Link The Lines Together, And Many Metro Stops Are Served By More Than One Colour. The Colour And Direction Of The Train Are Shown On An Outside Electronic Indicator On Each Railway Car. The Last Station On The Line Indicates Direction.
Smithsonian (Orange, Silver, And Blue Lines), Woodley Park-zoo/adams Morgan (Red Line), And Gallery Place-chinatown Are Popular Tourist Metro Stations (Red, Green And Yellow Lines). With Metro’s Trip Planner, You Can Organise Your Journey And Choose The Optimal Route.
Concerned About Internet Access When Using The Metro? The Majority Of Metro Stations Now Provide Free Wi-fi.
The Cost Of A Metro Ride Is Determined On The Number Of Stops You Make, And It Varies During Peak And Off-peak Periods. The Majority Of Rates During Rush Hours Vary From $2.25 To $6 Each Trip. Fares Normally Vary From $1.85 To $3.85 During Off-peak Times.
Riders Of The Metro Must Pay Using Their Smartrip Card Or The Smartrip App On Their Iphone Or Apple Watch. Smartrip Cards Are Plastic Rechargeable Fare Cards That May Be Bought In Advance On Wmata.com Or At Any Metro Station With Cash Or A Credit Card. With Metro’s Trip Planner, You May Determine The Cost Of Travelling Between Two Stations.
Whenever The Smartrip Card Is Accepted, Including On Trains, Buses, And In Parking Lots Run By The Metro, The Smartrip App May Be Used. The First Train System In The United States To Provide A Full-service, Touch-free Payment Option At Each And Every Stop Is Metro. For Further Details On Integrating Smartrip With Your Apple Wallet, See The Section Below.
Each Day, Hundreds Of Commuters And Tourists Use The Washington, Dc Metro. Since Local Commuters Utilise The Railway System So Often, There Are A Few Unwritten Norms That Tourists Should Be Aware Of. If Feasible, You May Choose To Travel During Off-peak Hours When The Rail System Is Significantly Less Busy.
Walk To Your Left And Stand To Your Right While Using The Escalator. Your Fellow Metro Passengers Firmly (And Often Loudly) Advise Against Standing In A Twosome That Blocks The Left Side.
Let Passengers To Disembark The Train Before Attempting To Enter It Whilst Waiting To Board. Step Just Beyond The Train Entryway If You Are Standing At A Doorway And The Train Is Very Busy So That Other Passengers Have Space To Depart.
Moving To The Centre Of The Vehicle Will Allow Others To Board The Train If It Is Busy. When You Reach Your Stop, You Will Have Enough Time To Get Off.
Trains Often Come During Peak Hours. Avoid Attempting To Board A Packed Train. Since The Automated Doors Are So Delicate, The Train Operator May Have To Dump The Whole Train If One Of Them Fails To Shut.
For Passengers With Disabilities, Most Cars Have Many Seats Available. If A Passenger Has To Sit Down, Kindly Don’t Utilise These Seats.
After You Pass The Gate, Make Sure Your Smartrip Card Is Ready To Be Scanned. Riders Travel Through The Line Swiftly; Standing In Line Is Not Encouraged.
While The Metro Might Be Quite Crowded, Most Other Users Are Pleasant And Will Be Able To Guide You. Each Station Has A Station Manager As Well. In Case You Have Any Queries Regarding Using The Metro, Don’t Be Reluctant To Inquire!

Metro Is Putting Out A New Version Of Its Famous Metrorail Map Today Ahead Of The Silver Line Phase Ii Expansion Opening Later This Autumn, Likely In November.
It Will Take Time To Replace The 5,000 Paper Maps That Are Now In Use At Stations And On Trains, According To The Transport Agency. The Updated Map Has Been Made Official And Will Soon Be Accessible Online And Elsewhere.
In A Statement, Metro Said That It Would Take Many Weeks Of Planning And Preparation To Print And Update Every Map In Different Formats, Along With Fare Tables And Consumer Pamphlets.
Wmata Is Also Replacing Old Signage With New Ones At A Number Of Stations That Have Had Their Names Changed, Including Ashburn And Downtown Largo, The New Terminus Stations For The Silver Line (Formerly Largo Town Center).

Consider Comparing And Contrasting The Maps For 2019 And 2022 As Well. To See The Changes, Move The White Bar Up And Down.
I Appreciate Everyone On Twitter Who Let Me Know About This New Map! Even Though The Blog Has A Lot Of Information On Washington, Dc, I Haven’t Really Examined The Official Wmata Map Since 2013, So This Change Seems Like A Good Moment To Do So.
Let’s Get It Out Of The Way Right Now, Everyone. Silver Line! Silver Line! It’s Finally Reaching Ashburn And Dulles Airport, And It Will Undoubtedly Open Soon. Washington Dulles International Airport Is The Name Given To The Airport Station On The Map, Which Is Customary For Wmata Even Though The Airport’s Actual Name Is A Real Mouthful. In Portland, The Trimet Max Map Simply Refers To The Airport As “Portland Airport” Rather Than “Portland International Airport,” And Everyone Understands What Is Meant.
The Names Of Five Stations Have Changed, Including Downtown Largo (From Largo Town Center), Hyattsville Crossing (From Prince George’s Plaza), North Bethesda (From White Flint), West Falls Church-vt (From Removing Uva From The Secondary Name), And Tysons (Tysons Corner). A Hollow White Dot Serving As The Station Marking Also Makes An Appearance For The Upcoming In-fill Station At Potomac Yard. In Order To Avoid Having To Alter Maps Once The Station Officially Opens, It Seems That This Will Be A Sticker Applied To The Top Of The Final Map At Metro Stations.
The 5a Bus Service To Dulles Airport Will End Once The Silver Line Extension Opens, And The Map Reflects This By Eliminating The Connecting Symbols At Rosslyn And L’enfant Plaza. The Last Bus On The Metro Map Is The B30 To Bwi, Which Is No Longer In Service.
Since Many Years Ago, Nothing Has Changed In Terms Of Style; This Is Still Clearly And Obviously A Wmata Map. There Are Several Contradictions, However, And Certain Areas May Need Work. First Of All, Wmata Has To Figure Out How They Will Consistently Handle Subtitles For Station Names. Virginia Square-gmu And Ballston-mu Are Among The Names That Are On One Line, While West Falls Church, Vermont, And Potomac Yard, Vermont, Are Given Their Secondary Names In The Subtitle. Why? It Seems That The Virginia Square And Ballston Station Dots Are Too Near To One Another To Allow For Subtitles, But This Only Leads To Inconsistent Design. In My Opinion, All Of These Two- Or Three-letter Abbreviations Need To Be Included In The Main Title, Leaving The Subtitles Free For The Lengthier Station Names That Require The Extra Room.
The Dc Metro Map Has Always Had A Busy Aesthetic, With A Lot Of Background Colours And Detail That Results In Some Poor Label Placement (Look At U Street And Other Stations On The Yellow/green Line That Are Just Laid Down Right On Top Of The Route Lines), But This Does Not Mean That New Additions Must Make Things Worse. Even Though There Is No Need For Them To Do So, All Of The New Silver Line Station Labels Overlap The Potomac River. We Don’t Need To See The Twists And Turns Of A River On A Simplified Picture Like This, And It’s Not Even A Terribly Accurate Portrayal Of The Geography Anyhow. The Readability Would Be Much Improved If The River Just Continued Out At A 45-degree Angle From The District Boundary, Avoiding Any Labels Entirely.
The Fairfax/arlington County Boundary Crosses The White Keyline Where The Silver Line Joins The Orange Line. All Other Borders Respect Such Keylines. This Is A Very Minor Technical Fault.
Our Ultimate Assessment Is That It Is A Clear Progression From Earlier Iterations—there Are No Surprises Here—and That It May Even Exacerbate Certain Prior Issues. Nevertheless, Silver Line! Gold Line!
