First Time Attempting The Author. My 11-year-old Had Me Purchase The Whole Series Because She Thinks It’s Fantastic.
Superb. Outstanding In A Word. Since I Had Never Read This Book Before, I Was Hesitant To Read It When My Father First Recommended It Because I Assumed It Would Be Unpleasant.but It Was Excellent.outstanding In A Word.
You Cannot Call A Children’s Book Wonderful If Only Kids Can Appreciate It. This Book Is Excellent. The Language, Writing Style, And Tempo.
If You’ve Seen The Film Before, You Should Give It A Go. The Book Is Far Superior Than The Film.
The City Of Ember Is In Trouble Over Two Centuries After It Was Founded. The City Has Little Natural Light, Constant Supply Shortages, And Blackouts, And Its Residents Are Constantly Sick With A Terrible Coughing Sickness. The Remaining Residents Of Ember, Who Are Primarily Destitute And Sometimes Enveloped In Complete Darkness, Constantly Live In Terror And Perceive Imminent Disaster.
Shortly After Ember’s “Builders” Had Finished Building The City, The Narrative Opens In The Dim Past. During A Conversation With His Assistant, Its Main Builder Discloses That Its Occupants Must Stay There For At Least 200 Years And That The Builders Will Provide A Set Of Important Instructions For Ember’s Future Residents. The Directions Will Be Kept In A Box With A Timed Lock That Will Unlock On The Appointed Day. Only The Successive Mayors Of The City Will Be Aware Of The Box, But None Of Them Will Be Aware Of What Is Within. The Identities Of The Builders And The Reason For Their Construction Of The City Are Still Unknown At This Time.
The Narrative Jumps To The Present After Establishing Ember’s Genesis Tale, However Sketchy It May Have Been. Although Residents No Longer Have A Reliable Count Of The City’s Founding Year, It Is Currently The Year 241. After Her Grandmother Moves The Hidden Box From The Remote Reaches Of A Closet, 12-year-old Lina Mayfleet, Who Just Finished From School And Entered The Adult Employment As A Messenger, Discovers It In Her Flat. After Podd Morethwart, Lina’s Great-great-grandfather And Ember’s Seventh Mayor, Stole The Box And Made A Failed Attempt To Unlock It For His Personal Gain, It Has Stayed There For Decades. Poppy, Lina’s Infant Sister, Has Destroyed And Bitten The Contents Of The Box Next To It: A Sheet Of Paper With Flawless Writing That Is Now Scattered Over The Floor And That Lina Assumes Must Have Originated From The Builders.
Lina Had Been Taught, Like All Of Ember’s People, That Ember Is A City That Stands Alone In A World That Is Otherwise Barren And Shrouded In Darkness That Begins At The City’s Limits And Never Ends In The Unknown Regions. But She Believes And Has Confidence In A City Of Light, Which She Often Imagines And Depicts In Drawings That Hang On Her Apartment’s Walls. She Also Thinks The Scrap Of Paper From The Opened Box Has A Crucial Message That Could Save Ember From Meeting A Horrible End.
Lina Then Makes The Decision To Decipher The Paper’s Message By Adding The Missing And Incorrect Words. Doon Harrow, A Friend And Former Classmate Who Now Works In The Maze-like Caverns Of Ember’s Pipeworks And Who Shares Lina’s Enthusiasm For Rescuing The City, Is Brought In To Aid. The Two Quickly Realise That The Letter Comprises A Seven-step Set Of Instructions For Leaving Ember With The Help Of Lina’s Friend Clary, Who Works In The City’s Greenhouses. They Eventually Learn That Its Point Of Exit Is The Pipeworks, Where A Roaring Subterranean River That Fuels The City’s Malfunctioning Generator Is Its Source. Additionally, Their Curiosity And Perseverance Lead Them To Secret Chambers That Have Been Carved Down Along The River’s Bank And Packed With Boats, Matches, And Candles So That All Of Ember’s Residents May Escape.
Working To Decipher The Message, Lina And Doon Learn Disturbing Realities About The City And Some Of Its Citizens. Lina Discovers That Her Buddy Lizzie Bisco Has Been Robbing The Storeroom Together With Looper, Her Boyfriend And Coworker. Doon Stumbles Onto A Hidden Area Where Mayor Cole Hoards Rare And Priceless Items, Including Food And Light Bulbs, While Investigating An Off-limits Passage In The Pipeworks. At Ember’s Gathering Hall, The Two Kids Present Their Evidence To Assistant Guard Barton Snode, But Their Efforts To Expose The Mayor’s Corruption Fail. Lina And Doon Were Targeted By City Guards Working In Tandem With The Mayor For Spreading What They Claim To Be Venomous Rumours.
At Singing, An Annual Occasion When Residents Congregate To Sing The City’s Three Great Songs, Lina And Doon Had Intended To Disclose Ember’s Escape Instructions And The Mayor’s Falsehoods. However, They Resolve To Leave The City That Day After Leaving A Note With Clary So That Their Other Inhabitants May Do The Same As They Hide From The Guards At Ember School And Leave A Message.
When Lina And Doon And Poppy Reach The End Of The River, They See A Sign From The Builders Greeting Ember Refugees. They Then Climb A Difficult Passageway To Reach A Wide Wilderness That Is Illuminated By The Moon And Other Natural Beauties They Have Never Seen Before. After Reading A Notebook Left By One Of Ember’s Original Residents At The River’s End, Lina And Doon Are Able To Fully Comprehend The Enigma Surrounding Ember: The City Was Built As A Haven For People Underground By A Group Of Worried Scientists And Engineers Known As The Builders, Who Thought The Earth Was In Grave Danger At The Time. Lina And Doon Are Doubtful Whether Anybody Is Still Living On The Surface After So Many Years.
The Kids Worry That Those Left Within Ember Won’t Know How To Leave After Seeing Lina Is Still Holding The Message For Clary. They Pursue A Hard Ascent That Leads To An Earthen Depression And Into A Cramped Tunnel That Finishes With A Huge Drop And A Startling Revelation As They Look For A Route Back Into Ember: Ember Is Located At The Bottom Of The Enormous Abyss, Visible By A Group Of Electric Lights, And Lina And Doon Can Only Communicate With Ember Through Clary’s Message. Lina Wraps The Letter In Doon’s Shirt, Weights It Down With A Boulder, And Then Launches The Package Into The Shadows Below. The Note Arrives In Ember And Is Delivered To One Of Lina’s Neighbours.
The City Of Ember Is A Pretty Fascinating Book That Is A Little Challenging To Categorise, In My Opinion. It Is Primarily A Blend Of Science Fiction And Fantasy With Excellent Amounts Of Intrigue, Mystery, And Adventure. Although This Is A Children’s Book, It Wasn’t Nearly As Grim As Other Tales Of That Kind. It Has A Post-apocalyptic Vibe To It With A Hint Of Government Intrigue. I Found Confirmation Of This Theme When I Discovered That The Author Drew Inspiration For The Book In Part Of Her From Her Childhood In The 1950s, A Time When Many People Were Preparing Bomb Shelters In Case Of A Nuclear War. I Could Absolutely Connect, Having Grown Up In An Old Home With A Bomb Bunker. Considering Lina And Doon’s Passion With Nature And The Environmental Lesson Jeanne Duprau Said She Wished To Communicate, I Too Believed I Noticed A Little Amount Of Environmental Message In The Novel. It Was A Lot Of Fun Trying To Solve The Puzzle Of What Ember Is, Where It Came From, And Why. And Some Of These Facts Were Revealed At The Book’s Conclusion And Others Were Not, Ms. Duprau Promised That The Remaining Mysteries Will Be Answered In The Series’ Subsequent Book, The People Of Sparks. The City Of Ember, In My Opinion, Also Included A Morality Story That Addressed The Notion That Each Of Us Had Both Light And Evil Sides, And That The Path We Choose To Choose May Have An Impact Not Just On Ourselves But Also On People Around Us. The Believers, Who Serve As Ember’s Spiritual Heartbeat, Provide A Little Amount Of A Spiritual Element To The Narrative. They Might Perhaps Have A Greater Part In Future Novels In The Series; I Would Have Wanted To Understand A Bit More About Them. But In The End, I Believed That The City Of Ember Was A Story Of Optimism, Bravery, Tenacity, And Selflessness In The Face Of Adversity.
The Two Protagonists, Lina And Doon, Were Fantastic. Although They Are Just Twelve Years Old When The Novel Starts, They Adopt Semi-adult Duties, Much Like Their Counterparts In Related Works. After The Passing Of The Adults In Her Life, Lina Took Up A Lot Of The Caregiving Responsibilities For Her Younger Sister. She Is A Very Vivacious, Tenacious, And Powerful Child Who Is A Survivor And Highly Responsible For Her Age. Doon, A Very Inquisitive Youngster Who Is Interested By Everything, Both Natural And Technological, I Believe Especially Captured My Attention. He Enjoys Studying The Few Living Things He Can Find In Ember, Especially Insects, And He Is Equally Enthusiastic And Skilled At Disassembling Things To Understand How They Operate And Reassembling Them. Doon Has A Little Bit Of A Temper Issue, But He Really Has A Nice And Compassionate Heart. The Counsel His Father Offered Him Was Excellent: “The Problem With Anger Is That It Seizes You. After Then, You Are No Longer In Control Of Yourself. Fury Is….. And When Rage Takes Over, Unexpected Outcomes Happen. I Felt That Was A Wise Saying For Both Children And Adults Who Could Have Anger Management Problems Doon Always Appears To Be Waiting For That “Big Moment” To Expose The Things He Discovers About Ember And Then Acknowledgments That It Was Probably The Wrong Thing To Do , Which Makes Me Believe That He Has An Underlying Ambition To “Be Somebody” Or “Do Something Important. He Could Even Have A Little Hero Complex. But Overall, I Really Liked Both Doon And Lina As People. I Was Amazed By How The Author Depicts Them As Sometimes Being Tempted To Act In An Immoral Manner, But In The End, They Decide What Is Best For Everyone In Ember, Not Just Themselves.
Jeanne Duprau Has A Gift For Eloquently Depicting The Sights, Sounds, And Surroundings Of Ember As Well As The Emotions That Various Events Inflict On Doon And Lina. This Novel Is Very Character-driven. In Fact, Because Ember Gets No Light At All During Blackouts And The Night, I Found It Intriguing (And Challenging) To Envision What Complete Blackness Feels Like. The City Of Ember’s Storyline Advances Briskly, Yet At Times The Author’s Vivid Pictures Make The Story Seem To Proceed At A Pretty Leisurely Pace. It Also Gets Off To A Leisurely Start, Developing The Action And Tension Gradually. These Issues Didn’t Really Bother Me Since I Like The Detailed Descriptions And Am Well Aware Of The Difficulties In Creating Realistic People And Settings For A Fictional World. I Could Understand How Youngsters With Shorter Attention Spans Would Sometimes Get Bored, However. But If Given A Chance, The Tale May Undoubtedly Capture Both An Adult And A Child’s Imagination. When I Chose The City Of Ember As Our Next Book To Read Together, My Daughter Was Not Quite Happy, But By The Midway Point, She Was Loving It And At The Conclusion, She Was Leading For The Sequel. Since The City Of Ember Does Have What I Would Describe As A Cliffhanger Ending, I Am Also Quite Excited To Read The Next Book In The Series. The People Of Sparks, The Prophet Of Yonwood, And The Diamond Of Darkhold Are The Ones That Come After It. The City Of Ember, A Children’s Novel Targeted For Adolescents Between The Ages Of 9 And 12, Really Got My Adult Interest And Has Since Won A Space On My Keeper Shelf.
