Although They Have No Inherent Meaning, They Have Developed A Recognisable Connotation Either Via Purposeful Design Or Frequent Use. These Items Are Not Symbols. They Are Only Markers That Serve To Identify The Things They Are Related To.
What We Refer To As A Symbol Is A Word, A Name, Or Even A Visual Representation That, While Being Used Often, Has Special Meanings In Addition To Its Usual And Apparent Meaning. It Alludes To An Ambiguous, Unknowable, Or Unknown To Us Concept. For Instance, The Double-adze Marking May Be Seen On Several Sites In Crete. We Are Familiar With This Thing, Yet We Are Unaware Of Its Symbolic Meaning. Another Instance Is The Indian Who Claimed That The English Worship Animals After Visiting England Because He Discovered Eagles, Lions, And Oxen In Historic Cathedrals. He Didn’t Know—and Neither Do Many Christians—that These Animals Are Emblems Of The Evangelists, Taken From The Vision Of Ezekiel, And That They Are Comparable To The Four Sons Of The Egyptian Sun Deity Horus. In Addition, Certain Things, Like The Wheel And The Cross, Are Well-known Worldwide Yet Only Have Symbolic Meaning In Particular Contexts. It Is Still Up For Debate As To What They Represent Specifically. Consequently, A Phrase Or Picture Is Symbolic When It Suggests Meaning Beyond The Straightforward And Immediate Sense. It Has A Broader “Unconscious” Component That Is Never Completely Or Accurately Described. Furthermore, It Is Impossible To Define Or Describe. The Exploration Of The Symbol Leads The Imagination To Concepts That Defy Logic. The Idea Of A “Divine” Sun May Come To Mind As A Result Of The Wheel, But At This Point Reason Is Forced To Acknowledge Its Limitations And The Inability Of Man To Articulate A “Divine” Creature. When We Refer To Something As “Divine,” Despite Our Logical Limitations, We Are Only Giving It A Term That May Be Based On A Faith But Never On Empirical Data.
We Often Employ Symbolic Phrases To Symbolise Ideas That We Cannot Completely Explain Or Grasp Since There Are So Many Things That Are Outside The Scope Of Human Comprehension. This Is One Of The Explanations For Why All Faiths Use Symbolic Words Or Symbols. A Psychological Reality Of Enormous Significance Is That Man Also Makes Symbols Involuntarily And Spontaneously, In The Form Of Dreams. This Conscious Usage Of Symbols Is Merely One Element Of This Psychological Phenomenon.
This Is A Difficult Concept To Understand. But If We Want To Learn More About How The Human Mind Functions, We Need To Understand The Purpose. Man Never Sees Or Understands Anything Totally, As We Can See If We Stop And Think For A Minute. He Has The Ability To See, Hear, Touch, And Taste; But, The Range, Quality, And Quantity Of His Senses Will Determine How Well He Sees, Hears, What His Touch Informs Him, And Tastes. These Restrict How He Can Perceive The Environment. He May Somewhat Make Up For The Limitations Of His Senses By Applying Scientific Tools. He May Use Binoculars To Increase His Field Of Vision, For Instance, Or Electrical Amplification To Increase His Field Of Hearing. However, Even The Most Complex Device Can Only Magnify Weak Noises Or Bring Distant Or Tiny Things Inside His Field Of Vision. No Matter The Tools He Employs, He Eventually Approaches The Limit Of Certainty That Conscious Knowing Cannot Cross.
Furthermore, Our View Of Reality Contains Unconscious Components. The First Is The Realisation That Even When Our Senses Respond To Actual Events—such As Sights And Sounds—they Are Somehow Transferred Into The Mental World. They Transform Into Psychic Happenings In The Mind, Whose Ultimate Nature Is Unknown Since The Psyche Is Unable To Comprehend Its Own Psychical Material. Because We Are Unable To Determine The True Nature Of Matter Itself, Every Experience Comprises An Infinite Number Of Unknown Aspects, Not To Mention The Fact That Every Tangible Item Is Always Unknown In Some Manner.
Then There Are Certain Occurrences That We Are Not Aware Of; They Have, In A Sense, Stayed Below The Threshold Of Awareness. They Have Taken Place, But Subliminally And Without Our Conscious Awareness. Only In A Flash Of Intuition Or Through A Process Of Deep Thought That Results In The Realisation That They Must Have Occurred Can We Become Aware Of Such Events; Even Though We May Have Initially Discounted Their Emotional And Vital Importance, It Eventually Bubbles Up From The Unconscious As A Sort Of Afterthought.
For Instance, It Can Manifest As A Dream. The Unconscious Part Of Every Event Is Often Exposed To Us In Dreams, Where It Manifests As A Symbolic Picture Rather Than A Logical Concept. In Fact, It Was The Study Of Dreams That Gave Psychologists The First Opportunity To Look At The Unconscious Component Of Aware Psychic Occurrences.
Psychologists Base Their Presumption That There Is An Unconscious Mind On Such Data, Despite The Fact That Many Scientists And Philosophers Disagree. They Foolishly Contend That Such An Assumption Presupposes The Presence Of Two “Subjects,” Or, To Use A More Popular Expression, Two Personalities, Inside A Single Person. But, Very Properly, This Is Precisely What It Does Indicate. And The Fact That So Many Individuals Struggle With This Split Personality Is One Of The Curses Of Contemporary Man. It Is Not At All A Pathological Symptom; Rather, It Is A Universally Observable Normal Reality. The Neurotic Is Not The Only One Whose Right Hand Doesn’t Understand What The Left Hand Is Doing. This Situation Is A Sign Of A Widespread Unconsciousness That Is Unquestionably Shared By All People.
Man Has Slowly And Laboriously Evolved Awareness Through Aeons Of Time, Eventually Reaching The Civilised Condition (Which Is Arbitrarily Dated From The Development Of Writing In Around 4000 B.c.). And Even Now, There Are Still Many Parts Of The Human Mind That Are Obscured By Darkness, So This Development Is Far From Finished. The “Psyche” That We Refer To Is In No Way The Same As Our Awareness Or Its Contents.
Anyone Who Disputes The Existence Of The Unconscious Is Really Supposing That Our Current Understanding Of The Mind Is Complete. And It Is Obvious That This Idea Is Erroneous, Just As Is The Presumption That We Already Know All There Is To Know About The Natural World. The Mysteries Of Our Mind Are As Endless As Those Of Nature. As A Result, Neither The Mind Nor Nature Can Be Defined. We Can Only Express What We Think They Are And, To The Best Of Our Ability, Explain How They Work. Therefore, Even Without Considering The Facts Gathered By Medical Research, There Are Compelling Logical Reasons To Doubt Claims Like “There Is No Unconscious.” People Who Say Things Like These Are Only Expressing An Old-fashioned “Misoneism”—a Dread Of The Strange And Uncharted.
This Opposition To The Concept Of A Previously Undiscovered Component Of The Human Mind Is Due To Historical Factors. Nature Very Recently Developed Consciousness, And It Is Still In A “Experimental” Stage. It Is Vulnerable To Certain Threats, Weak, And Easily Hurt. One Of The Most Prevalent Mental Disorders Among Primitive People, According To Anthropologists, Is What They Refer To As “The Loss Of A Soul”—which, As The Name Suggests, Is A Perceptible Disruption (Or, More Precisely, A Dissociation) Of Consciousness.
These Individuals, Whose Awareness Is At A Different Stage Of Development Than Ours, Do Not See The “Soul” (Or Psyche) As A Cohesive Whole. Many Primitives Believe That In Addition To One’s Own Soul, A Man Also Possesses A “Bush Soul” That Takes The Form Of A Wild Animal Or Tree And Shares Some Kind Of Psychic Connection With The Human Being. The Renowned French Ethnologist Lucien Lévy-brühl Referred To This As A “Mystical Participation.” Later, Under Pressure From Unfavourable Criticism, He Recanted This Statement, But I Think His Detractors Were Mistaken. An Individual May Have Such An Unconscious Identification With Some Other Person Or Thing, Which Is A Well-known Psychological Reality.
Among The Primitives, This Identification Might Take Many Different Forms. The Animal Itself Is Seen As A Type Of Brother To The Man If The Bush Soul Is That Of An Animal. For Example, A Guy Swimming In A River Full With Crocodiles Is Believed To Be Safe. His Sibling Is A Crocodile. If The Bush Soul Is A Tree, It Is Assumed That The Tree Has Some Kind Of Paternal Power Over The Person In Question. An Damage To The Bush Soul Is Seen As An Injury To The Man In Both Scenarios.
In Certain Tribes, It Is Believed That A Man Has Several Souls; This Concept Conveys The Perception Of Some Prehistoric People That Each Person Is Made Up Of Numerous Connected But Separate Pieces.
