They Tell Us To “be Ourselves,” But If You Listen Closely, There’s More To That Sentence: “. . . Until You Make Them Uncomfortable.”
Be Yourself Until You Make Them Uncomfortable.
There Is Always A Limit. A Breaking Point. Once You Cross The Line, Then You Are “too Much” And Are Put Back In Your Place.
In This Way, Acceptance Of Self-expression Becomes Conditional. Express Yourself Using This Template Under These Constraints With This Time Limit. Go! It’s Like Being Handed Over A Scantron Sheet And Demanded To Paint A Self-portrait On It. It’s Possible, Of Course, But Why Even Bother When A Canvas Is Within Our Reach?
Is It Really A Choice When You Don’t Get To Select The Options You Are Given To Begin With?
The Other Day, I Left The House Wearing A Teal Dress, Purple Lipstick, And A Full Beard. I Have Always—and I Mean Always—loved Color. If You Flip Through Our Old Family Photo Albums, It’ll Feel Like Sifting Through The Pages Of A Fashion Magazine. There I Am At Five Years Old, Wearing A Vibrant Floral Print T-shirt With Fuchsia Shorts, A Pink Lunch Box, And A Huge Smile To Top It All Off.
What I Like About Colors Is That When You Mix Them Together, They Become Greater Than The Sum Of Their Parts, Something Different Altogether. No One Goes Around Asking, “but Are You Really More Blue Or More Green?” Teal Is Not Blue-green, It Is Teal.
But I’m Getting Ahead Of Myself Here. Back To The Other Day. I Have To Admit It Was Foolish Of Me To Leave The House In That Dress. New York Winters Are Unforgivingly Cold, But There I Was, With No Coat, Trekking Through The Streets On My Way To The Grocery Store.
As I Walked Down Sixth Avenue, Two People Started Pointing And Shouting, “that’s A Man In A Dress! Hey, Everyone! Look! It’s A Man In A Dress!”
I Looked All Around Me, But I Couldn’t Find Whom They Were Talking About—there Were No Men In Dresses To Be Found. Besides, Even If There Had Been, How Is That Remarkable, Let Alone An Insult? It Is An Article Of Clothing! It’s Like Saying, “hey, Everyone, Look! It’s . . . A Lamppost!”
Nothing Out Of The Ordinary Here, Just Keep On Moving.
I Realized That They Were, In Fact, Addressing Me When They Took Out Their Camera Phones To Take Some Shots Of Me. My Heart Started To Beat Faster. My Chest Tightened. I Turned Up The Music In My Headphones. I Walked Faster.
I Did Not Look Back.
This Is A Disconnect I Have Come To Know Well: Between What People See And Who I Actually Am. I Have Learned That The Most Lethal Part Of The Human Body Is Not The Fist; It Is The Eye. What People See And How People See It Has Everything To Do With Power.
When I Finally Reached The Grocery Store, I Still Couldn’t Relax.
The Thing About Being Visibly Gender Non-conforming Is That We Are Rarely, If Ever, Defended By Other People In Public. Everyone Thinks That Since We “made A Choice” To “look Like That,” We Are Bringing It Upon Ourselves. The Only Reason People Can Fathom Why We Would Look This Way Is Because We Want To Draw Attention To Ourselves. They Can’t Even Consider That Maybe We Look Like This For Ourselves, And Not For Other People. We Are Reduced To A Spectacle. And When You Are A Spectacle, The Harassment You Experience Becomes Part Of The Show.
As I Checked Out My Groceries, The Person Next To Me In Line Approached.
Oh Dear, Here We Go Again.
“hey, Can I Ask You Something?”
I Started To Walk Away.
“why Do You Dress Like That?”
I Stopped In My Tracks. This Felt Like It Could Be Genuine Curiosity And Not Something More Hostile.
As I Prepared To Exit The Store, They Came A Little Bit Closer. My Heart Beat A Little Bit Faster. They Lowered Their Voice.
“it’s Just That . . . I Used To Wear Skirts And Dresses When I Was Younger.”
“what Happened?” I Asked.
They Laughed, But Their Eyes Told Another Story. There Are Some Questions That Have No Answers. How Do You Express Pain When You Can’t Even Locate The Wound?
It’s Like When You Let A Balloon Loose Into The Sky. You Don’t Know Where It Goes, But You Know It Went Somewhere.
Far Away.
The Most Effective Method Of Eliminating A Group Is To Demonise Them So That People See Their Disappearance As An Act Of Justice Rather Than Prejudice.
Wow. You Are A Legend, Alok Vaid-menon.
I Adore Alok To The Hilt. Because Of Jameela Jamil’s “I Weigh” Page, I Came Upon Their Instagram Profile A Few Months Ago, And I’ve Been Following Them Ever Since. I Was In Awe Of Them After Listening To Their Episode Of The I Weigh Podcast. The Concepts And Myths They Discussed, As Well As The Fervour With Which They Expressed Their Opinions, Were Really Amazing.
Prior To 2020, All I Knew About The Non-binary Community Was That They Used The Pronouns They/them. All I Knew About Them Was That. Being A Feminist-in-progress, I Have Always Been Ready With Facts And Arguments To Refute Any Sexist Or Factually Inaccurate Points Made By An Anti-feminist Whenever I Found Myself In An Argument With Them. I’ve Only Been Able To Achieve This Because I Passionately Educated Myself By Reading Up On Books And Articles On Women’s Rights And Women’s Problems.
Sadly, I Have Not Done The Same When It Comes To The Community Of Gender Non-conforming People. I Just Began Reading A Lot About The Trans Community And Attempted To Educate Myself On The Challenges They Faced By Following Trans Activists On Instagram And Youtube After Jkr Posted Transphobic Comments (Yet Again!). A Few Days Later, I Had An Argument With A Transphobe (Terf). Unlike Other Occasions When I Had Been Able To Firmly Dispute With People Who Were Illogical, This Time I Hesitated A Bit Because I Was Concerned That I May Not Have All The Facts Straight. I Then Saw That There Was A Lot More About The Community Of Gender Non-conforming People That I Needed To Learn.
What Aspect Of You Had To Be Destroyed In Order For You To Live In This World?
Beyond The Gender Binary, By Alok, Wonderfully Dispels Common Misunderstandings About The Community Of Gender Nonconforming Persons. They Discuss Their Personal Upbringing, Including How They Struggled With Gender And Sexual Identity And Were Pressured By Society To Conceal And Ignore Their True Feelings.
Reading This Book Was Such An Enjoyable And Educational Experience Because Of How Well-written And Succinct It Is. Alok Cites A Number Of Arguments That Bigots Use To Support Their Claims That Anybody Who Questions The Gender Binary Is Aberrant, Therefore I Anticipate Turning To This Book The Next Time I Find Myself Debating One.
“Gender Is Not Just A Word; It Is A Story.”
This Book Was Sent To Me As An Arc By Penguin Teen. My Opinions Are My Own.
I Gained A Lot Of Knowledge. About Me As Well As The Gender Binary…
“Like Under The Surface We Are Just Mean And Women Playing Dress Up, If You Take Away Our Clothing, Our Makeup, And Our Pronouns.”
Have You Ever Read A Book That Helped You Become More Self-aware As Well As Educated You? These Pages. It Undoubtedly Helped Me Become More Conscious Of How My Own Mind Operates In Relation To The Conventional Binary Norms. I’ve Always Been Extremely Careful Not To Provide My Kid Gender-specific Toys, Clothing, Or Activities, But After Reading This, I Realised There Are Other Things I Do That Might Be Potentially Damaging. Vaid-menon Increased My Awareness Of How Society Is So Used To Acting In A Manner That Is “Socially Acceptable” That They Fail To Notice How They Are Marginalising Other People, Particularly Those Who Identify In Ways Other Than The Gender Binary. This Book Gave Me A Lot Of “Ah Ha” Moments, And There Were A Lot Of Times When I Understood That I Could Never Fathom The Kind Of Suffering That Non-conforming People Go Through On A Daily Basis. It Is Demanding On The Soul And On The Individual To Have To Operate Within The Constraints Of A World That Forbids You From Being Who You Really Are. One Of The Passages That Particularly Struck A Chord With Me Was When Vaid-menon Spoke About How People Are Prepared To Put Up With Folks Who Identify As Non-gender Conforming But Are Unable To Even Defend Them In Public. References Are Used By Vaid-menon To Demonstrate How Identities Have Lived Outside Of The Binary For Ages And How This Is Nothing New. Overall, I Simply Think This Book Was Too Brief For Something So Potent. I Also Wished Sources For Further Research Had Been Included. That Is Something That I Would Have Loved As Well. I’m Eager To Read The Other Novels In This New Series From Penguin.
A Little Read That Beautifully Dissects Gender Norms In Western Culture. Alok Vaid-menon Examines How Gender Stereotypes And Expectations Affect Us All And How They May Be Constricting, Damaging, And Detrimental. Alok, Like Many Others, Struggled For Years With Self-hatred And Humiliation For Not Being Able To Or Wanting To Fit Into The Preconceived Binary. As A Result, It Took Them Years To Reach A Point Of Peace And Acceptance With Themselves. This Short Book Challenges Us To Think Deeply About Our Preconceived Notions About Gender And To Be Open To A More Inclusive Understanding Of This Element Of Being Human.
This Book Is A Great Introduction To Non-binary Problems For Being Fewer Than 70 Pages! Very Recommended
This Is A Little, Deeply Felt Book That Is Rather Nice. I Believe It Would Be An Excellent Introduction For Anybody In My Life Who Issues With Using My Pronouns Or Understanding What It Means To Be Non-binary. I Follow Vaid-menon On Instagram, And I Won’t Be Too Hard On Myself If I Admit That I Find Them Really Inspiring—both For Their Inventiveness And The Happiness They Seem To Find In Just Being, As Well As For The Way They Handle The Stuff They Post Both Online And In Real Life With Such Grace. This Tiny Book Was Wonderful.
“Over Time, I Discovered Harmony Where I Had Been Taught Discord. There Are No Inconsistencies Between The Beard, The Skirt, Or The Love—just A Person Trying To Make Sense Of Everything. Someone Who Is Both Quite Like You And Very Unlike You.
