She Phoned The Cops After Her Boyfriend Hit Her In The Face. She Phoned Again After He Whacked Her In The Head With A Chair. Police Would Come, And Despite Her Visible Injuries — A Cut Lip And A Swollen Eye — They Would Turn And Depart When Her Lover, A Rikers Island Jail Officer, Flashed His Own Badge.
He Continued To Strike Her Until Katrina Cooke Brownlee, 22, And Pregnant, Eventually Fled Their House In Medford, Long Island, With Her Two Small Children, Hiding Out In A Nearby Motel. That Was The Month Of January 1993. She Returned To The Home After Many Days Since She Realised She Needed Additional Clothing For Her Girls. Alex Irvin, Her Lover, Was Waiting For Her – Armed With A Revolver.
“Today Is The Day You Die, Bitch,” He Shouted, Firing Right At Her Stomach. He Shot Again Again, And Again, And Again. He Emptied The Five-round Cylinder Of The Handgun, Then Reloaded And Emptied It Again.
The Terrible Day Resulted In Three Astonishing Consequences.
Katrina Survived. Doctors Extracted All Of The Bullets Without Inflicting More Injury, Leaving Six Within Her. She Was Wheeled Out Of The Hospital Months Later. Her Unborn Kid Was Not Born Alive.
Two: She Rediscovered Her Ability To Walk. And Then Run. As It Poured, The Remaining Bullets Injured Her Left Side.
Three: Ms. Brownlee, Who Had Only Ever Been Let Down And Neglected By Men In Uniform, Even As She Stood As Living Proof Of The Beatings And Brutality One Of Them Had Given, Approached And Walked Into An Institution She Strongly Distrusted.
In A Subsequent Interview, Ms. Brownlee, Now 51, Remarked, “The Police Department Had Failed Me.” “I Aspired To Be An Excellent Officer.”
She Enrolled At The Police Academy In 2001. A 20-year Career Of Promotions To Busy, Hazardous Areas Of Police, From The Streets Of Brooklyn To Undercover Work In Drugs And Prostitution Operations, Followed. She Wound Up On The Mayor Of New York’s Top Executive Security Detail As A Bodyguard.
Ms. Brownlee Worked Tirelessly To Keep Her Shooting A Secret Throughout All Of Those Posts. She Was Worried About How Her Fellow Cops And Employers Would React To Her Terrible Injuries And Reasons For Entering Their Ranks.

“People Are Judging,” Ms. Brownlee Said. “‘maybe You’re Insane. Let Me To Take Your Pistol. ‘maybe You’re A Nutcase.'”
Thus She Covered Her Scars Behind Her Police Uniform At First, Then Beneath Her Disguises For Covert Work, And Lastly Beneath The Mayor’s Security Detail’s Business Suit. “I Wanted To Tell People So Many Times,” She Added, But She Kept Her Tale Tight To Her Chest, Buried Like The Last Gunshots.
She Retired As A First-grade Investigator In July. Her Tale Ultimately Came To Light When She Chose To Retire Those Outfits For Good.
Katrina Brownlee Grew Up In Bed-stuy Brooklyn, New York, And Was An At-risk Adolescent. At The Age Of Fourteen, She Became A Mother.
