Roger Zelazny’s ten Amber novels take place in two contrasting worlds, Amber and Chaos, and in shadow worlds (Shadows). Members of the royal family of Amber can travel freely through the Shadows, altering reality or creating a new reality. The series was published over the years from 1970 to 1991, with portions of the first novel previously published in Kallikanzaros. Corwin wakes up from a coma and discovers he is part of a superhuman royal family who rule over the one true world, Amber. He attempts to conquer Amber, but is captured and blinded. Dworkin Barimen enters his prison and draws on the wall the door through which Corwin regains his vision.
Ilse’s school days turn to lessons of survival, while Janusz, her family’s Polish laborer, tells her stories of a besieged kingdom in the Baltic Sea. It is told from multiple perspectives, with two children from the two different families, Ilse and Arno, who come to understand the harsh realities of living during war times.
The Hand of Oberon (1976) is a novel by Roger Zelazny that follows the story of Corwin and his family. Corwin travels to Tir-na Nóg’th to gain insight into the situation and finds himself at the Primal Pattern instead of Amber. Oberon offers the throne to Corwin with Dara as Queen, but Corwin refuses and is pursued by Brand and a storm. He creates a new Pattern to get to the Courts of Chaos, but Brand steals the Jewel and loses it. Brand is killed by Caine and falls off a precipice into the Abyss with Deirdre. The Jewel is recovered by Random, who is accepted as the new King. Corwin relates the story of the first five novels to his son Merlin, who is a young hacker/magician in a technological/magical arms race. Merlin is a Prince of Chaos and Amber, and the series is a coming of age for him. He discovers the body of his ex-girlfriend Julia and finds himself in sorcerous combat with Jasra. Luke, his best friend, is revealed to be Rinaldo, son of Brand of Amber, who has been responsible for yearly attempts on Merlin’s life.
Sofa Segovia’s “Tears of Amber” is the latest book translated into English by the Mexican writer. It follows the story of Simonopio, a boy born with no upper lip, gums or palate who is followed by a swarm of bees and is graced with mystical powers of premonition. The book is overlong and lacking the magical delights of Segovia’s previous book, but is a skillfully rendered tale, at once heartbreaking and heartwarming. The book is set in the years before, during and after World War II in East Prussia.
Ilse’s parents are forced to work their land to produce food for German soldiers, assisted by Polish captives. Ilse forms an enduring friendship with one of the captives, Janusz, who tells her stories of silence, hunger, cold and tears. Ilse and Arno are two children of war who are forced to make adjustments no child should endure. Ilse insists on bringing her doll as they race away from their farm, and Arno takes a butcher’s cleaver from one home and thinks of himself as navigating a labyrinth. They are intent on surviving, but they accumulate scars that can endure. At one point, Ilse finds herself alone in the confusion, which is her bloodless, invisible wound.
Luke and Coral became the sovereigns of Kashfa, in the same church where they had fought almost to the death with Jurt. As Amber’s only representative, the narrator was accorded a ringside standing-place and had to keep alert and mouth appropriate responses. Random had changed from a happy-go-lucky musician to a sage and responsible monarch, and the narrator hopes it won’t mellow Luke out. Coral and Luke had been married as kids, part of a diplomatic arrangement between Jasra and the Begmans. The principals had forgotten about the marriage until recent events served as a reminder. Luke was swayed by the idea of a Begman queen on the Kashfan throne, and Coral was not well due to a black patch over her right eye. Dworkin replaced the damaged eye with the Jewel.
The narrator is standing in a gateway and feels like a Trump contact is with them all the time. They extend a line of power to a powerful force in distant Shadow and push through a fiery veil. They behold a faint patch of light and a complex, three dimensional construct, half familiar, which is the pathway to attuning to the Jewel. An unfamiliar voice tells them to go no further, though they realize it is Coral who is making the sounds. The narrator was troubled by dark, swirling dreams, with faces of human, animal, and demonic moving about them. A creature called the narrator’s name, and the room seemed to be shaking.
The Lord of Chaos is awakened by Gryll, an old family servant from the Courts, who taught him the bonedance game. He is sent to fetch Prince Merlin back for the ceremonies, and the narrator recalls childhood memories of playing with demons. The narrator promises to bear Gryll upon their back, and the narrator remembers playing with demons more than with their mother’s relatives.
The Amber Shadows is a gripping novel of lies and intrigue at Bletchley Park by Sofia Segovia. It follows Honor “Honey” Deschamps, aged 24, as she works as a typist with a team of codebreakers in World War II-era Britain. It is a brilliant novel of lies and intrigue at Bletchley Park by Sofia Segovia. The Amber Shadows is a fast-paced mystery set in late 1942 in Europe.
It follows Honey Ribchester, a cryptanalyst and Hut 6 Typex operator, who deciphers wireless messages intercepted by allied spies. The mystery revolves around the 1941 German invasion of Russia, where the original Amber Room disappeared from St. Catherine’s Palace in Leningrad and has never been found. Ribchester deploys Honey into the heart of the mystery, and she receives mysterious pieces of amber with an evolving code in them. They share romantic woes, improvise makeup and fashion fixes, and fortify each other in pursuit of victory.
Ribchester has won literary prizes including a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award, and her prose shimmers with nuances unique to Britain and that era. Dickie’s motivations are never fully explored, but Ribchester has won literary prizes including a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award. It follows two children, Ilse Hahlbrock and Arno Schipper, who have no control over the political issues of their era and find themselves struggling to survive in wartime. The novel opens on March 25, 1938, when Ilse is unaware of the “master of her country’s fate” coming to Konigsberg for a parade and a major speech.
Janusz is orphaned at twelve and tells stories to young Ilse. Januta’s amber provides the title and motif of Segovia’s novel. After the war, East Prussia is divided between the USSR, Latvia and Poland. Two families, the Hahlbrocks and the Schippers, set out on arduous journeys to escape the Soviets. Segovia creates sympathetic characters who show heroic initiative and determination to survive. Janusz, the oldest of the “children”, flees with the Hahlbrocks to keep the family safe. Karl Schipper, a carpenter, blames his father’s generation for Germany’s surrender in 1918 and supports Hitler in 1938. After Kristallnacht, he finds it hard to imagine Jews are now “the enemy”, as the Jewish community has been integral to Konigsberg for centuries. Karl is conscripted and sent to the east during the German siege of Leningrad, where he works as a machine gunner to build officers’ quarters. When Hitler invades the Soviet Union, he is shipped to a military hospital with a bullet lodged in his chest and an addiction to opiates. Back home, he appears a shadow of himself to Arno, and is sent westward to fight the American forces in the Ardennes forest. At the end of the novel, reunited with some of his family, he is too worn out to do anything but live on his soldiers’ pension.
