A Succinct Statement Of A.a.’s Primary Goal. The Conference Updated The 1947 Manuscript, Which Was First Drafted By Grapevine Editors.

The Aa Grapevine Magazine’s June 1947 Edition Included The Debut Of The Aa Preamble. It Was Written By The Editor At The Time, Who Heavily Referenced The Foreword To The First Edition Of The Big Book, Alcoholics Anonymous, In Many Of His Sentences.
The Preamble Was Written Especially To Explain Aa To Nonalcoholics Since, In Those Early Years, The Grapevine Had Only Just Started To Spread Among Them. For The Benefit Of The General Public, It Is Still Often Used. With Time, It Started To Appear In All Publications Endorsed By The Conference, And Many Aa Groups Today Use It To Start Meetings.

Substance Abuse And “Chemical Dependence” Are Terms That Are Often Used To Describe Alcoholism And Drug Addiction. As A Result, Aa Is Occasionally Introduced To And Encouraged To Host Meetings For Both Alcoholics And Nonalcoholics.
Open Aa Meetings Are Open To Everyone. A Closed Meeting Is Just For Members, While An Open Meeting Is Open To The Public.
Only Individuals With A Drinking Issue Are Permitted To Attend Secret Sessions Or Join Aa. Only Those Who Also Struggle With Drinking Are Eligible For Membership In Aa, Regardless Of Their Other Issues. 3 The Sole Need For Membership In Aa, According To Tradition, Is A Willingness To Quit Drinking.
Members Of Aa Provide Person-to-person Care Or “Sponsorship” To The Alcoholic Who Comes To Aa From Any Source. They Share Their Experience With Anybody Looking For Assistance With A Drinking Problem. The Twelve Steps Of The Aa Programme Provide The Alcoholic A Path To Creating A Fulfilling Life Without Alcohol. Discussions About This Programme Take Place At Aa Meetings. 4
Due To Representations They May Have Seen In Films Or On Television, People Who Have Never Attended A Genuine Aa Meeting May Have Misunderstandings About How They Operate.
Anybody Is Welcome To Attend Open Aa Meetings, Which Are Often “Speaking Meetings,” When An Aa Member Will Share Their Experience—what It Was Like, What Occurred, And How It Is Today. But The Majority Of Aa Meetings Are Exclusive To Members.
An Aa Meeting Typically Consists Of A Subject Discussion. The Meeting’s Facilitator Selects A Subject, And Participants Take Turns Discussing Their Own Experiences With It. Some Aa Meetings Have A Set Agenda, Such As 12-step Study Groups Or Sessions For Newcomers To The Group To Introduce Them To The Fundamentals Of The Programme.
Numerous Studies Have Shown That Members Of Mutual Support Groups Were More Likely To Stay Sober Than Those Who Made An Independent Effort To Stop.
Numerous Studies Have Shown That Combining Aa Membership With An Outpatient Or Inpatient Treatment Programme Improves Results For Those Who Seek Professional Therapy Or Counselling For Their Drinking Issues.
When Compared To Treatment Modalities Like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, A Recent Research Indicated That Aa And 12-step Groups May Result In Greater Percentages Of Ongoing Sobriety Across Months And Years.
Clearly, Not Everyone Is A Good Fit For Faith-based Organisations Like Alcoholics Anonymous. Although Millions Of Individuals Claim To Have Achieved Long-lasting Sobriety In Aa, Some Drinkers May Find The Program’s Spiritual Component To Be A Roadblock.
Can Aa Assist You? The Only Way To Know For Sure Is To Try It Out And Decide For Yourself If You Believe That Receiving Support And Assistance From Others Dealing With The Same Issue Would Help You Remain Clean. Attending An Aa Meeting Won’t Cost You Anything Since There Are No Dues Or Fees. The Easiest Way To See How Aa Works Is To Offer The Right “Dosage,” Which Is Generally 90 Sessions Over The Course Of 90 Days. One Or Two Encounters Is Not Enough Of A Trial.

An Explanation Of The Preamble’s Greater Goal And Effect On Persons In Recovery Is Provided Below, Section By Section:
Alcoholics Anonymous Is A Fellowship Of Men And Women Who Share Their Experience, Strength, And Hope With One Another, According To The Organization’s Preamble.
This Not Only Explains The Purpose Of The Organisation But Also Outlines A Fundamental Method For Running Meetings. (This Is Distinct From The Many In-group Proverbs And Mannerisms One Is Likely To Hear During Meetings.) It Focuses On Reminding Members That The Main Goal Of Aa Meetings Is To Share Personal Experiences.
This Is Significant For A Number Of Reasons. First, Because Rather Than Lecturing, Aa Promotes Having An Open Mind And Communicating Via Sharing Experiences. Addicts Are More Inclined To Pay Attention To Advice From Others If It Is Related To Their Own Experience.
One Of The Biggest Obstacles Individuals (Particularly Males) Confront When The Idea Of Receiving Assistance Is Brought Up, And Aa Meetings Work To Ensure That Members Are In A Position Where They Are Receptive Of Support And Counsel.
Additionally, It Establishes The Notion That If You Attend A Meeting, You Should Speak Up Or That You Will Gain The Most By Telling Your Own Narrative. Sharing May Help You Let Go Of A Lot Of Pent-up Feelings, Tension, And Aggravation, But You Should Share For Reasons Other Than Your Personal Gain. You Never Know Who May Benefit From Hearing Your Experience When You Share It At An Aa Meeting.
Every Meeting’s Objective And The Group’s Overall Identity Are Stated In The Prologue. “…share Their Experience, Courage, And Hope With One Other In Order To Solve Their Shared Issue And Aid Others In Beating Alcoholism,” The Rest Of The Sentence Says.
This Makes It Very Apparent What The Purpose Of Every Meeting Is: To Assist Members In Overcoming Their Alcoholism.
This Suggests That You’re Never Alone, One Of Aa’s Core Principles. Working The 12 Steps Isn’t Something That Can Be Done Without A Sponsor And A Support Network, As Many Aa Veterans Can Attest To. As A Result, The Preamble Serves As The Foundation For A Group That Strongly Relies On Camaraderie As A Motivator For Self-improvement.
A Change To The Aa Preamble Was Accepted By Advisory Action At The 71st General Service Conference Annual Meeting, Which Was Conducted Online From April 17 To April 25, 2021. In The First Phrase Of The Preamble, The Term “People” Was Substituted For The Words “Men And Women.”
The More Inclusive Phrase Was Initially Brought Up For Discussion When It Was Recommended To The General Service Board A Number Of Years Ago.
The Gsc Conference’s Topic This Year, “Aa In A Time Of Change,” Was Appropriate. We Live In A Time Of Transition, As Co-founder Of Aa Bill W. Noted In The Conference Report, Which Was Published More Than Three Score Years Before. The Traditions Are Very Unlikely To Change, But Our Twelve Steps Probably Won’t Either. But Let’s Hope That The Way We Communicate And The Way We Arrange Ourselves For Purpose And Service Will Continue To Improve Through Time. A 1960 Gsc Lecture By Bill W.
The Gsc Decided To Adopt The Simplified 3-words Trimmed To 1-word Alteration, And The Aa Grapevine Board Proceeded To Claim Copyright Of The Preamble At Its Inaugural Meeting. An “Association Of Persons” Is Unnecessary. All Fellowships Are Made Up Of Individuals, Sometimes In Several Subgroups. It Is Entirely Up To Each Group To Decide Whether To Begin With The Present Preamble, A Previous Preamble, Or Any Other Words Of Their Choosing: “Each Group Is Independent…”
Personally, I Believe That Our Boards Lost A Significant Chance. The Aa Grapevine Lost An Opportunity To Totally Rework The Preamble In Fewer Phrases Without Outmoded Vocabulary Like “Fellowship And Sect.” A Further Opportunity Was Lost By Aa World Services To Create A Somewhat Longer And More Straightforward “Introduction To Aa” Speech That Groups Might Read At The Start Of Meetings, If They So Desired. If This Isn’t Brought Up Again Either Next Year Or Soon, I’d Be Shocked.

The First Publication Of The “Modern Aa Preamble” Was In The June 1947 Issue Of The Grapevine.
It Was Written By The Editor At The Time To Explain Aa To The Grapevine’s (#ad) Non-aa Readers, And It Has Since Been Included Into Aa Literature. Because It Is Repeated So Often At The Beginning Of Aa Meetings, It Became Known As The “Aa Preamble.”
