24 Hours A Day: A Review Of The Little Black Book
Twenty-four Hours A Day Filled A Spiritual Need Among Recovering Alcoholics At The Time Of Its Publication. Alcoholics Anonymous’ Step 11 Urged Daily Prayer And Meditation But Left No Specific Guidelines On How To Carry Out These Disciplines. The Big Book (Bb) Recommended That One Memorise A Few Set Prayers That Emphasise The Concepts It Covers In Addition To Seeking More Guidance From One’s Priest, Minister, Or Rabbi.
That Basically Left Religious Devotionals For Alcoholics, Which Of Course Were Not Designed For Drunks And Which, Then As Today, Don’t Address The Unique Needs Of People In Recovery. But, One Of These Devotionals—god Calling—was What Ultimately Motivated A Certain Alcoholic To Write A Book That Would Really Address His Fellow Alcoholics.
The Little Black Book (Lbb) Was Originally Only A Series Of Little Cards That Richmond Walker Wrote Down For His Personal Use. Members Of The Aa Group In Daytona Beach Encouraged Rich To Publish The Book Under Their Sponsorship Because They Wanted To Participate In These Meditations.
The Book Was An Instant Hit After Being Printed At The Neighbourhood County Courthouse And Distributed Out Of Rich’s Basement. The Book Sold 18,000 Copies Between 1948 And 1954 (When Hazelden Took It Up), A Significant Number Given The Size Of Aa At The Time. It Later Gave Rise To The Modern Meditation Book Genre, Gave Hazelden Its Start In The Publishing Industry, And Eventually Became The Best-selling Recovery Book After The B.b., With Sales Now Exceeding 10 Million.
The Only Indication Of The Authorship Of The Lbb Is A Note At The Back Stating That It Was “Prepared By A Member Of The Group In Daytona Beach, Fla.” In Brookline, A Neighbourhood Of Boston, Richmond Walker Was Born Into A Prosperous Family. He Was A Thinker Who Was Drawn To Thinkers Like Plato And Kant. He Was Intelligent And Well-educated. His Drinking Career Began In College At The Age Of 20 And Ended In 1939, When He Became Sober And Joined The Oxford Group, 27 Years Later (Og). He Joined The Newly Established Aa Group In Boston In 1942 After A Brief Relapse In 1941. Three Years Later, “For Drunks Only,” A Pamphlet He Began After Moving To Daytona And Which Would Also Inspire The Lbb, Was Published With The Support Of The Quincy Group Of The Aa.
The Lbb Is A Example Of Simplicity In Organization. A Thought For The Day, Meditation For The Day, And Prayer For The Day Are The Three Sections On Each Page, Which Is Just 3″ X 8,” With The Latter Two Being Printed In A Smaller Font Than The First. The Thought Typically Occupies The First Half Of The Page, Followed By The Meditation And The Prayer, Which Often Take Up The Last Three Lines. This Arrangement Holds True Throughout The Whole Piece.
The Three Sections Work Together To Form A General Theme. The First Presents A Theme And Asks A Final Question That Draws The Reader’s Attention Back To A Key Idea Within That Theme (Sometimes The Entire Passage May Be A Series Of Questions). One Or More Theme-related Ideas Are Advanced To The Level Of Sustained Meditation In The Second Step. The Third Asks God To Grant One’s Desire That An Ideal Or Aspiration Contained In A Thought Or Meditation May Come True In Their Own Lives.
Consequently, Thought, Meditation, And Prayer Are Closely Related To One Another. They Create A Spiritual Continuum That Invokes The Imagination, Heart, And Mind. Unlike Certain Forms Of Meditation, This One Does Not Try To Supplant Reason Or Prayer. Instead, There Is A Harmonious Fusion Of The Three That Calls For Extended Spiritual Reflection And Contemplation. The St. Francis Prayer In Step 11 Of Aa’s Twelve Steps And Twelve Traditions (12&12), Which Was Published Seven Years After The Lbb, Serves As The Traditional Model.
If We Take A Quick Look At Each Of The Three Sections, We Will See That, As The First Word Suggests, The Aa Thought For The Day Is Focused On Our Experience As Alcoholics. The Bb, Which It Liberally Quotes, And Walker’s Earlier Work, “For Drunks Only,” Are Both Heavily Adapted In This Piece. As A Result, It Often Takes The Form Of A Narrative And Refers To “We” Or I In Relation To Our History With Drinking And Our Recovery In Aa. Several Of The I Passages (Such As 03/29–04/04) Are Unmistakably Autobiographical; Rich Shares, After The Bb, Who He Was Before He Joined Aa And Who He Is Now That He Is Sober.
It Is Simple To Overlook The Fact That The Aa Experience Shared In The Book Is Often Organised Around Clearly Defined Recovery Themes Since The Book Lacks An Index Of Topics. These Themes May Either Be Broad And Span A Large Number Of Pages Or Narrow And Just Cover One Page At Various Points During The Work.

It Took A Long Time To Realize How Erratic Feelings Often Victimized Us. In Others, We May See Them Quickly, But Not So Much In Ourselves. First Of All, Even Though Such Disclosures Were Painful And Humiliating, We Had To Acknowledge That We Had A Lot Of These Flaws. We Had To Eliminate The Term “Blame” From Our Speech And Thinking Where Other People Were Concerned.
I Discovered That My Grudge List Was Full Of My Prejudices And My Blaming Of Others For My Inability To Succeed And To Live Up To My Potential After I Completed My Fourth Step While According To The Big Book’s Guidelines. I Also Realised That Being Black Made Me Feel Unique. I Discovered That I Always Drank To Get Rid Of Those Feelings While I Worked On The Step. I Could No Longer Place Blame Until I Gathered My Composure And Worked On My Inventory.
The Main Focus Of The Daily Meditation Is Our Spiritual Awakening. The Aforementioned God Calling, Which Walker Used In The Og, Served As The Inspiration For Some Of The Content In This Section. Affirmations Or Declarations Of Spiritual Intention May Sometimes Be Used During Meditation. Sometimes They May Be Resolutions, Although They Are More Like Reminders Of Spiritual Attitudes To Cultivate Than They Are Self-willed Expressions. There Are Also Instances Of Self-talk That Mirrors Some Of David’s Psalms And Is Meant To Inspire Spiritual Growth.
These Meditations Include Broad Topics Including The Spiritual Life, Spiritual Experience, Conscious Contact, God As We Understand Him, And Practising The Presence Of God In Addition To Specific Principles Like Faith Or Humility. These Meditations Are Exceptional Because They Are Both Spiritual And Useful, Inspirational And Substantive At The Same Time. They Include A Little Fluff.
The Daily Prayer Is Often Started With “I Pray That,” And Its Tone Is More Aspirational Than Petitionary. While It Is Based On The Idea That God Is The Source Of The Power That May Enable The Prayer’s Aspirations To Come True In Each Of Our Individual Lives, The Prayer Is Not Addressed To God Directly. Once Again, Spirituality Is Grounded In Experience And Combines With Practise.
The Lbb, Like The Bb, Was Significantly Influenced By The Og. Nonetheless, Several Ideas That The Bb Has Abandoned Are Still Given Prominent Display By The Lbb. The Four Absolutes (Honesty, Purity, Unselfishness, And Love, As In 08/29) Are Among Them, Albeit The Word “Absolute” Is Avoided (Which Is What Alcoholics Objected To) And The Idea Is Qualified By The Addition Of Two More Crucial Characteristics: Humility And Gratitude. The 5cs (Confidence, Confession, Conviction, Conversion, Continuance, As In 05/23-05/27) Concept, Which Relates To 12th-step Work With Other Alcoholics, May Sometimes Come Across As A Little Too Rigid And Religious.
Biblical Allusions Are Also Used More Often And Explicitly By The Lbb. On A Few Occasions, The Name Of The Apostle Paul Is Mentioned, And The Parables Of The Prodigal Son And The Good Samaritan Are Specifically Mentioned. Scriptures Are Sometimes Quoted Directly And With Quotation Marks, But The Source Is Never Mentioned. Nonetheless, The Lbb Mostly Adheres To The Bb Precedent Of Using Scripture Without Citation Or Any Other Kind Of Attribution. In Every Instance, Verses Are Used To Illustrate A Spiritually Practical Point Rather Than A Doctrinal Or Theological One.
We Can Also Notice Some Tonal Differences. For Instance, The Bb Significantly Went Away From The Rhetoric Of Responsibility, Obligation, And Exhortation. The Lbb Still Uses Some Of This Idiom, Most Noticeably In Its Excessive Usage Of Language That Some Aas Term “Musty,” Like In The Thought Entries Of 03/08 And 05/25, When An Imperative “Must” Is Stressed In Every Line. For Us Alcoholics, Being Told What We “Must” Do Doesn’t Work That Well. We Like To Hear About The Other Person’s Programme Use And How That’s Working Out In Their Daily Lives.
That’s Why The Bb Adopted A Narrative, Experience-based Approach That Favours The Use Of More Polite Terms Like “May” And That Tries To Encourage Sharing And Identifying By Emphasising The Use Of “We” And “I.” The Lbb Adheres To This Model For The Majority Of Thought Entries, But In The Meditation It Often Continues To Use An Outdated Injunctive And Instructive Style In Which The Reader Is Repeatedly Referred To As “You” (For Example, On October 10, 12, And 14). This Often Comes Out As A Little Too Preachy To Recovering Ears, Just As The Word “Must” Does. “You” Is The Official Salutation For The Person In A Position Of Authority Or Expertise, As Well As For Lecturers, Teachers, And Preachers. It Doesn’t Speak The Same Language As The Heart Or The Fellow Sufferer. We Refer To The Programme As A “We” One In The Rooms.
These Flaws Are The Byproducts Of An Outdated Methodology Since The Lbb Is A Work In Transition Between Religion And Aa Spirituality. Yet, These Are Flaws That Lbb Has Mostly Abandoned, But Not As Much As We Would Want. The Lbb Is More Like The Bb And The 12 Steps Than Any Other Book In The Secondary Aa Literature, Taken As A Whole. Yet, Unlike Any Other Work, It Fits More Of The Programme Onto Each Of Its Tiny Pages. The Book Is Still Unparalleled For The Recovering Alcoholic Who Wants To Regularly Practise Prayer And Meditation.
That Has Been My Experience In Any Case. I First Used The Lbb In 1984, When I Had Just Been Sober. After Some Time, I Switched To Other Meditation Books, Several Of Which Were Published By Hazelden. The Books Eventually Become Thin. I Went Back To The Lbb Six Years Ago, And I’ve Been Using It Ever Since. This Time Around, It Has Been Extensively Marked Up And Annotated. No Matter How Many Times I Read A Certain Selection, I Always Find Something Worthwhile To Consider. It Helps Me Focus On My Spiritual Recovery Programme. It Serves As A Reminder Of Where I’ve Been And Where I’m Going, As Well As A Model For How I Might Try To Live My Life Right Now, One Day At A Time.
